There is a very competitive race in the Visual Effects Oscar category this year. There’s the old standby (“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”), the head-scratcher (“Napoleon”), the iconic monster (“Godzilla Minus One”), the space-faring super-hero team (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

Yes, trailers are just marketing material, and we’re not a BFD Advertising and Design class. But as any studio will tell you, a well-crafted trailer that builds hype and excitement for a movie can be a make-or-break part of the puzzle that creates much-needed anticipation and even word of mouth.

Filmmaker Gareth Edwards is coming off his epic sci-fi original film, “The Creator,” a film that saved millions of dollars in VFX by essentially doing it all after the fact. Meaning instead of setting up expensive green screens, blue screens, and mo-cap suits to capture the spots where VFX would typically be inserted, Edwards and his team just shot the movie generally as one would in the wild and then basically Photoshopped on all the VFX afterward (that’s not the most technical version, but probably the most accurate the audiences will understand; read our ‘Creator’ review here).

With a budget of $80 million—a pittance compared to the budgets of most modern blockbusters— Gareth Edwards has made his long-awaited return to science-fiction on the big screen with “The Creator,” a provocative sci-fi adventure set roughly 50 years in the future, where Western society is devastated by and at war with artificial intelligence (read our review). Whereas the East, having not undergone a similar tragedy, has embraced and fostered the technology.

Gareth Edwards returns to theaters this weekend with “The Creator,” a sci-fi epic that’s his first feature since 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” But is a return to big-budget blockbuster filmmaking for the director? So, filmmaker Gareth Edwards is doing the interview round for his latest sci-fi extravaganza, “The Creator,” starring John David Washington. It’s a movie heavily indebted to “Blade Runner,” “Apocalypse Now,” and even “Star Wars” (read our review here).

A familiar mélange and pastiche of sci-fi-tropes you’ve seen and felt before, filmmaker Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction drama, “The Creator,” is recognizable but, nonetheless, largely compelling— skillfully understanding the crucial balance of blockbuster scale and grounding character intimacy. Its intriguing examination of what constitutes a sentient being—coupled with its aesthetic mix of lo-fi, gritty, and grimy tech blended with sleeker, cleaner, and austerely traditional visual references to the future— makes for an engaging experience clearly designed for the big screen.

He’s captivated our imaginations with iconic monsters and futuristic space battles, using a symphony of light, scale, sound, and mastery over visual effects. Oh, and he really knows how to make Darth Vader scary.

Even though Gareth Edwards broke out with his debut feature, “Monsters,” back in 2010, we really don’t know too much about him, as a filmmaker. He followed that film up with “Godzilla” in 2014, which was fairly well received, but it’s his third film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” that most people remember him from.

As is the case every year, September remains a notable film month mainly because so many overlapping and concurrent film festivals are taking place. As Venice, Telluride, and the Toronto International Film Festival begin and come to a close, with others such as Fantastic Fest and the New York Film Festival upcoming, there’s plenty on the horizon for exciting films even if they won’t be playing theatrically, for a few months.

One of the most anticipated sci-fi film of 2023 — particularly now, with “Dune: Part Two” having been pushed back to 2024 — has got to be Gareth Edwards‘ latest feature,”The Creator.” Edwards’ first film since 2016’s “Rogue One” Lucasfilm movies, this new thriller is set in the year 2070, in the midst of a war over the future of artificial intelligence.

Tyler, the Creator will guest star on Big Mouth, with the rapper set to voice a character in an episode of the series’ sixth season when it premieres later this month.Along with Tyler, other guests who will voice characters on season six of the animated Netflix show include Maroon 5‘s Adam Levine, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Capaldi, Steve-O, Amber Ruffin, Chris O’Dowd and Annaleigh Ashford.Regular voice cast members like Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen and Jordan Peele will also be returning, with the likes of Ali Wong, Chelsea Peretti, Natasha Lyonne, Nathan Fillion, Kristen Schaal and Jenny Slate all appearing too.According to a Netflix synopsis, Big Mouth season six will focus on “the theme of family as the beloved characters continue each of their journeys, discovering that while you can’t always pick your family, you can surround yourself with those that love you for who you are”. A trailer for the upcoming instalment was released yesterday (October 3).

Tyler, the Creator has shared a good dollop of new music tonight (April 17). First, he’s remixed La Roux’s Supervision song “Automatic Driver.” Plus, he has two contributions to Buffalo rapper Westside Gunn’s brand new album Pray for Paris: Tyler’s featured on “327” and he produced “Party Wit Pop Smoke.” Hear the new songs below.

Tyler, the Creator has announced that he’s one of the artists set to perform at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Tyler’s album IGOR—which went to No. 1 last year in a surprise win over DJ Khaled—was nominated this year for Best Rap Album. The 2020 Grammys take place on January 26.

Tyler, the Creator has shared a note on Instagram reflecting on his 2009 mixtape Bastard, which arrived on Christmas day that year. “Christmas 2009 I released my first album Bastard on zshare to 46 people,” Tyler wrote in the post.
