Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Christmas is not about money,” says Pepper (Jillian Bell), the passive-aggressive Christmas store elf in “Candy Cane Lane.” “Except that it is.” She could almost be describing Christmas movies. From the start, they’ve paired a celebration of the Christmas spirit, in all its enveloping toastiness, with a theme of raw economic desperation. You can trace this right back to the original Christmas movie — “A Christmas Carol,” and by that I don’t even mean the assorted film versions (though I grew up with them and especially loved the 1951 version with Alastair Sim) but the Charles Dickens novella, published in 1843, which essentially invented the modern Christmas.
BreAnna Bell Tracee Ellis Ross received quite the Christmas surprise at her “Candy Cane Lane” premiere when she learned of her cameo in Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” film. The actress spoke with Variety on the carpet when she learned of her brief appearance in the film, which shows her among the crowd at one of the “Alien Superstar’s” Los Angeles shows at SoFi Stadium. In the clip, which follows another notable cameo from Cardi B, Ross is seen holding her breath as she participates in Beyoncé’s now-viral mute challenge.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Thanksgiving,” a cheerfully debased — or maybe I should say de-basted — slasher film directed by Eli Roth, marks the second time that one of the luscious mock trailers from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse” has been spun into a feature film. The first such movie, Rodriguez’s “Machete,” worked better than anyone might have expected; it gave Danny Trejo perhaps the best lead role of his career, and it was tasty enough in its high-zooming vengeful action hyperbole to spawn a sequel. Roth’s trailer for “Thanksgiving,” on the other hand, was a bloody perfect, outrageously transgressive parody of the holiday horror genre that had long gone out of style.

of Julia, about and her TV series, The French Chef, then . The critically-acclaimed series—which debuted on Max (previously HBO Max) in the spring of 2022—will return for season two the week before Thanksgiving (November 16, to be exact) with an additional eight episodes that expands Julia's universe, both figuratively and literally.Case in point: Julia season two is off to the French Riviera—and Paris—for the first three episodes, which continue to blend the show's signature humor with insightful commentary on what it meant not just to be a woman in the ‘50s and ’60s, but a woman pursuing her second act, and doing so unapologetically. To mark the occasion, Glamour has an exclusive first look as Julia Child (the dynamite Sarah Lancashire) and Simca Beck (Isabella Rossellini) reunite in the South of France, which serves as a spectacular backdrop complete with epic culinary adventures. In order to bring those episodes to life, the show filmed on location last summer in the areas of Provence, Nice, Cannes, Antibes, and Paris.

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Time to get more sand for the hourglass. “Days of Our Lives” has been renewed by Peacock for two more seasons, which means the iconic soap opera will make it to at least its landmark 60th season. “Days of Our Lives” moved to Peacock in September, having previously aired on NBC since 1965. “Days” was NBC’s longest-running drama series before switching to Peacock in 2022. This new two-year deal for Seasons 59 and 60 reps a much swifter and calmer renewal for “Days” than it has experienced in recent years, when deal between NBC and Sony Pictures Television (which distributes the soap) seemed to always come down to the wire. As ratings declined for soaps, that has been a perennial issue at the networks (where the tally on broadcast nets now stands at just three — two on CBS and one on ABC).
