Last year, A24 became the first studio in the Oscars‘ 95-year history to sweep the six major awards categories with “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” So things couldn’t be better A24, right? Not so fast, says The Wrap. The outlet reports that the small studio that’s made big waves since it debuted a decade ago will switch up their strategy after several of its theatrical releases lost money this year.

Dicks: The Musical. With a name like that, how could a film not deliver a ridiculous viewing experience? This new movie, which just arrived in theaters, is a wild and wacky take on the classic story of family reconciliation.

You’ll forgive us for not seeing everything at the Toronto International Film Festival, some things fall through the cracks, and arguably the biggest, one we’re still dying to see is “Dream Scenario” starring Nicolas Cage. It’s a surreal A24 comedy starring Cage, co-produced by Ari Aster (“Beau Is Afraid”), with the music made by occasional Arcade Fire musician Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy).

“Dicks: The Musical” has an extremely useful title. Your gut reaction to those three short words will help you decide whether you can stomach this loony A24 movie, which had its world premiere Thursday at the Toronto International Film Festival — or if it’ll make you retch.Trust your instincts, because the film itself, directed by Larry Charles (“Borat”), won’t change your mind. You go in either loving this sort of thing — or loathing it.This creature from the wacko lagoon has ample obscenities, constant profanity, razzmatazz songs and dances.

last year’s “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies” and Edebiri’s levelheaded deliveries make the most insane ideas sound totally logical and reasonable. The two make perfect foils.

Forty years ago, the late filmmaker Jonathan Demme and the art-punk band The Talking Heads made one of the most outstanding concert docs of all time, “Stop Making Sense.” Now on this milestone anniversary, the beloved concert doc returns to theaters with a TIFF World Premiere and Global IMAX Live event on September 11 in a pristine new 4K restoration. Following that debut, the doc will then exclusively open in IMAX on September 22 and in theaters everywhere on September 29.

After a decade of making a name for themselves on YouTube as RackaRacka, Danny & Michael Philippou‘s entered the horror genre conversation after their feature debut “Talk To Me” hit theaters last weekend. The film had already won over critics at Sundance earlier this year, but horror aficionados took notice after A24 won the rights to distribute the movie stateside.

After winning its first Best Picture Oscar this year for “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” all eyes are on A24 this awards season. So is there a runaway smash hit for the distributor that matches last year’s buzz of the Daniels film? Not really, but “Past Lives” has received lots of critical loves, and Jonathan Glazer‘s “Zone Of Interest” likely will too.

Moviegoers already knew that Todd Haynes‘ “May December” would open the 61st annual New York Film Festival this Fall. But now another North American premiere will happen in NYC.  Sofia Coppola‘s “Priscilla” will be the festival’s Centerpiece on October 6 before it hits theaters later that month courtesy of A24.

“All I wanna do is cut hair, and they keep dropping.” A24 has a knack for finding a lot of strange and weird films, and the new film, “Medusa Deluxe,” definitely fits that bill. A British murder mystery set in a competitive hairdressing contest, the film is the feature-length directorial debut of Thomas Hardiman, known for shorts like “Pitch Black Panacea” (2020) and “Time on My Hands” (2012).

A24 has built a name for itself as a studio that releases quality indie content. The studio has gained such a reputation that there are film fans that will watch a movie solely based on the A24 logo.

While he isn’t so much of a household name to non-basketball fans as LeBron James, Stephen Curry is one of the best NBA players of the past 20 years. Teenagers are idiots. Can we just all agree on this? When an adult comes across an embalmed hand that is somehow haunted and can contact spirits, they’d likely get rid of it in no time.

You may not yet know filmmaker, writer/director, and actor Julio Torres, but you should, given the fact that A24 and Tilda Swinton co-signed on him seemingly immediately for his feature-length debut. Torres is best known as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” and as the co-creator, writer, and executive producer of the HBO series “Los Espookys.” While the latter HBO comedy was short-lived, those who saw it clearly loved it.

Actor-turned-filmmaker Olivia Wilde (“Booksmart”) is certainly making waves in the cinematic space and will be taking a crack at the television with the help of A24. South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook returned to theaters last year with “Decision To Leave.” And by all accounts, it’s another masterwork from him, and one of the best films of 2022. Now Park returns to TV for the first time since 2018’s “The Little Drummer Girl” with “The Sympathizer,” set for an exclusive release on Max in 2024.

So far in his short career, filmmaker Ari Aster has become an indie auteur in the vein of Jordan Peele in just two short films. His films may not be of the same scale—yet—but they are just as ambitious.

After its historic Oscars night earlier this month, A24 looks to continue it success in 2023 with several upcoming releases. And be sure that Ari Aster‘s “Beau Is Afraid” and Netflix‘s “Beef,” which had a stellar world premiere at SXSW, will have their fair share of devotees.

I talked about this in my write-up for “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the upcoming live-action remake from Disney, but David Lowery is the King of the “one for them, one for me” creative model. Almost like clockwork, the filmmaker will follow up an indie film with a big-budget film before coming back to another indie drama.

For decades now, indie filmmaker Nicole Holofcener (“Friends With Money,” “Lovely And Amazing,” “Please Give”) has been delivering sharply observed, bitingly hilarious, empathic, complex comedies about the human condition, family, and life’s ordinary struggles. Often compared to Albert Brooks, Woody Allen, and Walt Stillman, filmmakers of somewhat similar urbane comedies, Holofcener’s always had a tenderness and humanity that maybe seemed a little too far out of reach of those dudes, and yet, never dulling her comedic blade.

Last month, director Trey Shults confirmed that he and Abel Tesfaye (aka music superstar The Weeknd) would co-write a new film featuring Tesfaye, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan. An intriguing list of artists there, to be sure.

On Sunday, A24 became the first studio to win all six major categories at the Academy Awards with “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” An impressive feat, to be sure, but David Byrne didn’t win Best Original Song for “This Is A Life,” his contribution to the Daniels‘ film. But, alas, A24 has something to cheer Byrne up.

There was a moment last week in preparing for Oscar coverage when it hit me. Almost exactly a year prior, in the middle of March 2022, I’d interviewed Michelle Yeoh and The Daniels about their new movie at the time, “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” 12 months ago.

There’s a terrific tension at the center of Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut, “When You Finish Saving The World,” and it seems to do with liberal ideology, identity, projection, and the push and pull fractures parents have with their teenage children and vice versa. Written and directed by Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore and “Stranger Things” stars Finn Wolfhard, “When You Finish Saving The World” essentially is a comedic family drama about a mother and son who are trying to fill the gaps with how they no longer fit with other people.

It’s Halloween, and there is some exciting news on the horror front as Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and A24 have announced they are teaming up for “Crystal Lake,” a prequel series that takes place in the world of “Friday The 13th” for Peacock’s streaming service. The beloved slasher film series would eventually see Jason Voorhees as the main threat against anyone with a pulse, as the zombified killing machine stalked the rural area where he died until he eventually explored Manhattan and space in subsequent sequels.

Every moment makes a memory, one that’s finite and fading but also leaves a trace behind of who we once were and what we once knew. All that we recall of our experiences, what lingers of them, exists somewhere between reality and our perception of it: between what was said, what was seen, what was felt, and what could be understood only later.  Looking back on childhood, especially, demands the reconciliation of certain temporal, spatial, and also emotional tensions: between a past that formed us in more ways than we realized and a present that affords us time and distance from which to remember, to forget, and perhaps to see things more clearly.

Last month, Darren Aronofsky‘s first film in five years, “The Whale,” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with critics praising Brendan Fraser‘s performance as a 600-pound gay man. But EW reports (via an interview with Variety), that Aronofsky initially attempted to cast an obese actor in the part before going with Fraser.
