Fresh off its SXSW world premiere, Alex Garland‘s “Civil War” hits theaters today, the latest film in an impressive filmography. So impressive, in fact, with films like “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” among it, that one may ascertain to call Garland an auteur.

Alex Garland’s bold new political thriller “Civil War” won the box office this weekend, grossing $25 million, the highest opening for an A24 movie ever. Captivating the public with its visceral violence, shocking images, and frightening cautionary tale politics that mirror today’s division, the movie is also earning much acclaim for a brief but chilling performance by Jesse Plemons (“Killers of The Flower Moon”) playing a cold-blooded soldier unnervingly executing civilians at will (read our review).

Less than 20 minutes into Julio Torres’s surrealist comedy, Problemista, wild-eyed art critic Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) is trying to find a photo of her begonias. Frantically searching through her iPad to show her new assistant Alejandro (Torres) her garden in Maine, the atmosphere grows increasingly tense, as her mounting frustration turns into a series of violent jabs against the display.

Alex Garland‘s “Civil War” isn’t even in theaters yet but he’s already looking to start his next project with A24 as soon as possible. And Deadline has more casting news for Garland and Ray Mendoza‘s upcoming “Warfare.”  Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, and Finn Bennett all join the cast for the project, a veritable who’s who of young UK acting talent.

Having recently left his film post at Netflix to start his own media company, many wondered where Scott Stuber would land next. While his new company has not been named yet, the producer has found his next project: a film about Bruce Springsteen centered around the storytelling in his classic ’70s album Nebraska.

Alex Garland took SXSW 2024 by storm last night with the world premiere of his latest film, “Civil War.” And the new feature, about a near-future United States fractured into warring factions, has many moviegoers excited and anxious about the film’s imminent release in theaters and IMAX next month. THR reports that Garland took questions about his new movie at a Film & TV panel in Austin today to explain why he chose to make “Civil War,” if he’s trying to say anything explicit about American politics, and whether A24‘s release of this film before the 2024 US presidential election is deliberate bad timing or coincidental.

Here’s an interesting trio of castings: Deadline reports that Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, and Callum Turner are in talks to star in the rom-com “Eternity” over at A24.  David Freyne will direct the pic from a script by Pat Cunnane. It’s a joint affair for Star Thrower Entertainment and A24, with Teller and Olsen also on board as executive producers.

Ever since “Beau Is Afraid,” horror filmmaker Ari Aster has been touting his next project, a follow-up project that reunites him with Joaquin Phoenix. Describing it as a “Western comedy” set during the pandemic, the cast details are finally out via A24 (see below), confirming several rumors about the project over the past few months.

It may not have taken the Palme d’Or, but Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” is now a part of Oscar history. The A24 release won the International Film Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first submission from the United Kingdom to take the honor.

There are many dozens of classic prison movies, everything from “The Shawshank Redemption” to Robert Bresson’s “A Man Escaped” to several Clint Eastwood movies, and many of them revolve around the human spirit, the will to live beyond the psychological claustrophobia of incarceration. But perhaps there’s been no prison movie like “Sing Sing,” a new A24 drama starring Colman Domingo, about a theatre troupe that finds escape from the realities of incarceration through the creativity of putting on a play.

A “Jungle Cruise” reunion is in the works, and, no, it’s not “Jungle Cruise 2.” Instead, Variety reports that the co-leads of the Disney film may reunite for Benny Safdie‘s MMA biopic “The Smashing Machine,” with Emily Blunt in final talks to join the picture.  Dwayne Johnson was already aboard the project, Safdie’s solo directorial debut about MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr.

If you don’t recognize Benito Skinner’s name chances are you’ve seen his Instagram or TikTok videos. A content creator who exploded during the stay-at-home pandemic, Skinner made a name for himself with his impersonations of the Kardashians and his fictional characters such as LA relator Deliverance Richards and Jenni the TMI hairstylist.

Joseph Quinn‘s busy film slate gets even busier. Deadline reports that one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars adds another upcoming movie to his roster: an untitled war pic from A24, with Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza co-directing.

Is it time to officially anoint Nicole Kidman as the queen of prestige television officially? Because she’s exactly that, and kudos to her and her agents for reading the tea leaves on the shifting industry ages ago. A24 has a lot of enticing films on their release calendar this year, fronted by the delayed “Problemista!” on March 1, “Love Lies Bleeding” a week later, and Alex Garland‘s”Civil War” in April.

At first glance, “Love Lies Bleeding” might look like another Americana-steeped tale of lovers on the run. But a look beyond its sleek hardbodies reveals that director Rose Glass has once again made a monster movie, albeit one of a different character than the spiritual possession in her scorching debut “Saint Maud.” Here, Glass finds a Gothic-tinged tale of passion and pride burning brightly amidst the embers of the eighties.

Writer, director, actor, and comedian Julio Torres really broke out as the co-showrunner and actor on HBO’s short-lived comedy series, “Los Espookys,” featuring Fred Armisen. While that series only lasted two seasons, it’s made its mark with all the right people (Armisen and “Saturday Night Live” exec Lorne Michaels also co-produced his 2019 comedy special “My Favorite Shapes,” so clearly he has fans).

Earlier this fall, news dropped that A24 wanted to get into big IP in the near future. And the future is now: the indie studio will team up with Hideo Kojima for a live-action film of the acclaimed video game “Death Stranding.” This follows up news from almost exactly a year ago that Kojima Productions had a film adaptation of their game in the works.

After “The Whale” last year, many movie fans wondered what Darren Aronofsky would helm next. Well, IndieWire reports that the director will work with A24 again for his next project, which is about the last thing anyone expects (and probably the last movie anyone needs to see).

Walter Isaacson’s biography on the world’s richest person, according to the source, who added the Musk biopic will be produced by Aronofsky’s production company, Protozoa Pictures.“Glad Darren is doing it.

How’s this for a buzzy cast list? Deadline reports that Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich will star in “Opus,” an upcoming horror film from A24. The movie marks the feature debut of writer-director Mark Anthony Green, and he’s culled quite the ensemble for his first film.

Paul Rudd is one of the most likable actors working today. Jenna Ortega, on the other hand, is one of the most popular, thanks to her role in Netflix’s “Wednesday.” A24 is hoping that bringing them together for an upcoming dark comedy, “Death of a Unicorne,” could be a massive hit.
