Andrea Arnold Says Her New Film ‘Bird’ Started With the Vision of a ‘Tall, Thin Man With a Long Penis Standing on a Roof’

Alex Ritman Andrea Arnold’s initial inspiration for her Cannes competition entry “Bird” was perhaps not what many people might have been expecting. “A very long time ago, I had the image a tall, thin man with a long penis, standing on a roof,” she explained at the press conference for the film on Friday when asked about her initial visual prompt. “But I didn’t know if he was good or bad or what he was.” From this bizarre starting point, Arnold crafted a social realist drama about a family on the fringes of society living by British seaside and an unexpected visitor who becomes close to a young girl entering puberty.

As buyers touch down at LAX for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. Production Hub Czech Republic Looks to Lure More Blockbusters With New Film and TV Law

Christopher Vourlias When the creative team behind Prime Video’s splashy fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” began scouring the globe for locations five years ago, it ran into a problem not uncharacteristic of that period of peak TV: It was all but impossible to find a production hub that could both accommodate the show’s sprawling footprint and meet its exacting technical requirements, with studios from Atlanta to London to Budapest booked year-round. The producers ultimately chose the Czech Republic, a country with a rich cinematic history, a competitive 20% cash rebate, skilled crews and a reputation for servicing foreign blockbusters at a fraction of Hollywood or U.K.

‘Bird’ Review: Andrea Arnold Taps the Star Power of Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski but Returns to Her Bleak British Roots in a Coming-of-Age Fairy Tale

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Eight years ago, the writer-director Andrea Arnold packed up her hand-held-camera brand of kitchen-sink British austerity and took it across the pond to make “American Honey,” a movie about a wolf pack of kids in a van who seemed to incarnate the tumult of the 21st century. The movie, crafted in a style that I thought of as hip-hop Dardenne brothers, was an indie explosion that felt like a landmark. Now, though, in “Bird,” the first dramatic feature that Arnold has made since (in between, she directed episodes of “Big Little Lies” and “Transparent” and made the documentary “Cow”), she’s back to chronicling the miserablism of aimless, scroungy British young folk who experience their lives as a dead zone.

Here’s why ‘A Gentleman In Moscow’ season two probably won’t happen

Ewan McGregor stars in the TV adaptation of Amor Towles’ novel A Gentleman In Moscow.Led by showrunner Ben Vanstone, the show follows aristocrat Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov as he returns to Russia in the aftermath of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, where he’s arrested and banished to a hotel attic by a Soviet tribunal.Along with starring in the lead role, McGregor also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Vanstone, Tom Harper and others.Other cast members include Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Fehinti Balogun, Daniel Cerquieria, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson, Johnny Harris, Leah Harvey and Josh Heffernan.Probably not. The show is billed as a limited series, and while this doesn’t rule out a second season (as shown with Big Little Lies), it does suggest that the chances are low. It’s also hard to imagine considering A Gentleman In Moscow covers all the events in Amor Towles’ original novel, so any second season would have to go beyond the source material.
