Apple TV+ took viewers underground in a teaser trailer for the new series “Silo,” starring Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Rashida Jones and more.Premiering on May 5, the futuristic sci-fi series is an adaptation of Hugh Howey’s dystopian trilogy of the same name. After an apocalypse, the last 10,000 people alive take shelter in an underground apparatus that was built a mile beneath the Earth’s surface.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor The American Society of Cinematographers handed out its best visual storytelling in feature film award to “Elvis” on Sunday night, and in doing so, Mandy Walker has become the first woman to win the top prize in the society’s history. Walker triumphed over Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths”), Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick” and Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) in a very competitive race.  Walker‘s win comes as Oscar voting ends on March 7, where she is also nominated. She became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.” Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) made history as the first female DP to land a nom in 2018, while Ari Wegner was nominated last year for “The Power of the Dog.”

Cinema Audio Society’s CAS Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the CAS winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor “Top Gun: Maverick” topped the winners at the 58th Cinema Audio Society Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing. Other winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Moonage Daydream,” “Better Call Saul,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Five-time Oscar-nominated production sound mixer Peter J. Devlin, whose credits include “Black Panther,” “Bullet Train” and “Gone in 60 Seconds,” was honored with the Cinema Audio Society’s 2023 career achievement award. Alejandro González Iñárritu who directed this year’s Oscar-nominated “Bardo” received the CAS Filmmaker of the Year.

The March talk at the West Lothian History and Amenity Society is on local woman, Isobel Wylie Hutchison (1889-1982), a writer, botanist, film-maker, Arctic traveller and poet.

All Quiet on the Western Front‘s Daniel Bishop and Ozark‘s Dave Chameides and Cristian Trova were named Camera Operator of the Year in film and TV, respectively, by the Society of Camera Operators.

Visual Effects Society’s 2023 VES Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. The James Cameron epic set a VES record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Diane Warren and Son Lux were among the winners Wednesday evening at the 4th annual Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards. The awards recognize original score and songs in visual media across seven categories. Darren Criss, hosted the banquet at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles. Damien Chazelle and his go-to composer Justin Hurwitz received the Spirit of Collaboration Award. The duo has collaborated on five films including “Babylon,” “La La Land,” “Whiplash,” “First Man” and “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.” The presentation of the award was accompanied by a musical performance including “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from “La La Land,” the “First Man” theme for harp and theremin, and a “Babylon” medley which included “Voodoo Mama” and “Herman’s Hustle.”

The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) presented the winners of the 4th Annual SCL Awards for score and songs in visual media tonight at the Skirball Cultural Center.

The BFI today announced that it will invest $7 Million (£6M) of National Lottery ‘good cause’ funding over three years in Doc Society.

That old time religion takes another hit in The Starling Girl, an effective if somewhat overdrawn account of an obedient 17-year-old girl in a fundamentalist society who is lured astray by a local former pastor. Everything about Laurel Parmet’s feature directorial debut has been fastidiously tended to in this well-carpentered drama that will appeal to young female audiences who will be both fascinated with and appalled by the rigid strictures and male-dominated activities that, according to the film, define the lives of the women in such fundamentalist communities.

The 60+ members of the National Society of Film Critics (mostly NYFCC and LAFCA members) too some time out on the first Saturday of 2023 to select their honorees for 2022. The top prize went to Todd Field’s “TAR” for Best Film which also won the equivalent prize from the aforementioned Los Angeles and New York critic organizations.

The National Society of Film Critics has named Tár as Best Picture in the group’s 57th annual vote Saturday. The results were announced on Twitter.

Gale Anne Hurd has been selected by the Visual Effects Society (VES) as the next recipient of the VES Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her contributions to visual arts and filmed entertainment. The award will be presented at the 21st Annual VES Awards on February 15, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Ward has been named executive director of the Visual Effects Society — the first woman to lead the honorary society. She had served as interim executive director since the retirement of longtime executive director Eric Roth in September.

The long-awaited DC Universe “Black Adam” superhero film premiered recently in New York, the embargo has been lifted, and everyone is free, per Warner Bros., to discuss the film in whatever terms they like. If you’re online, especially on Twitter tonight, you’re likely going to be hearing a lot about the film’s post-credit scene that will have been spoiled in a matter of minutes and will likely have fans, or at least the DC Universe disciples, in a big lather.

Self Esteem has said she is “asking questions that pop music doesn’t get to” with her Mercury shortlisted album Prioritise Pleasure. The 36-year-old musician, real name Rebecca Lucy Taylor, is among one of the 12 acts in the running for the prestigious award alongside Harry Styles, Sam Fender and Little Simz. The event, which recognises the best British album of the year, was previously postponed due to the Queen’s death and is being held at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, west London on Tuesday evening.

The Casting Society is out with the TV, theater, short films and shortform series nominations for its 38th annual Artios Awards. Netflix’s lapped the field with 10 noms, and Apple TV+, HBO, HBO Max and Hulu are next with five each.

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Who can forget Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” that cheeky work of early-18th-century satire in which the author had the nerve to suggest cannibalism as a means of keeping Ireland’s unwanted kids “from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick”? In “Plan 75,” debuting director Chie Hayakawa floats an equally extreme idea of her own without so much as a glimmer of irony, and the suggestion is upsetting enough that the public will likely still be citing it decades down the road. Set in near-future Japan, where it’s a surplus of seniors — versus an abundance of babies — that’s causing trouble, this chilling social drama takes its name from a hypothetical new legislation whereby an overtaxed government offers its elderly citizens an incentive to euthanize.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Korean indie production house, IMTV is developing and will produce a drama series based on the New York Times best-selling novel, “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See.  The story is set largely on the remote Korean island of Jeju, among the community of ‘haenyo,’ women who earn a living by free diving for mollusks, seaweed and other sea life from the depths of the ocean. Representatives of a rare semi matriarchal society, the women work while the menfolk typically stay at home, though property is passed down along male lines. Celebrated activist and Nobel Prize-winner Malala recently boarded a documentary project about the haenyo of Jeju that is set up at the A24 U.S. indie studio.
