As if “The Bear” Season 2 couldn’t be more hyped. Variety reports that “Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk joins the cast for the upcoming season of FX‘s hit kitchen drama.

After creating one of the greatest TV shows of all time, with HBO’s “The Sopranos,” you’d think David Chase would have turned that into a golden ticket to make years and years of whatever TV shows or films he wanted. Instead, he wrote and directed the 2012 film, “Not Fade Away,” and wrote the ‘Sopranos’ prequel, “The Many Saints of Newark.” That’s it.

After its premiere on FX last June, “The Bear” quickly became one of 2022’s most critically acclaimed TV series. And now the buzzy show returns sooner than expected.

Good news for fans of the “Alien” franchise who want to see more xenomorphs soon: Deadline reports that Noah Hawley‘s FX prequel series “Alien” will begin shooting this year. FX adapts The New York Times writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s 2019 debut novel “Fleishman is in Trouble” into an engaging mini-series about the difficulty of change and how human beings bounce off each other, often sending people in directions they never expected. Some of the characters may feel a bit shallow—their problems are arguably the kind of selfish concerns that most people in the world would kill to have—but that’s embedded in the intelligent writing and a cast that understands these people don’t have to be likable to feel genuine or be interesting.

Back in May, it was announced that FX is developing a series based on the dystopian sci-fi novel “Never Let Me Go” by Japanese-British author Kazuo Ishiguro that comes from writer Melissa Iqbal from “The Nevers,” DNA Productions, FX Productions, and Searchlight Television. Comedies often defy the concept of the sophomore slump and actually improve in their second seasons as the writers learn how to write for the timing of their characters, and everyone gains confidence through the mandate of a renewal. It’s hard to believe that FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” one of the best comedies of 2021, could get better, but the first four episodes of season two display little sign of decline, hinting at a year that could be even emotionally richer than the first.

It’s always nice to see a series based on a movie really take off and become its own thing, find its own voice, and discover its own sea legs. And FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows,” based on the feature film of the same name by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, has certainly down that.

And when you crossed a lot of moral lines, betrayed former allies beyond the pale of forgiveness, deceived your masters, and worked for the murderous American CIA regime in Afghanistan during the war-torn 1980s, the specters of your various sins are going to eventually catch up with you.

Just when you’re convinced that there is no way FX is going to do another “Fargo” season, the network turns around and gives Noah Hawley the greenlight for a new batch of episodes. It’s easy to get cynical about the glut of movies being adapted into TV series because of the Age Of Content and the surplus of streamers who need series and, well, “content.” However, if there’s one series that’s really flourished and come into its own as its own thing is FX’s version of “What We Do In The Shadows.” Based on the 2014 film created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the series, like the movie, is a mockumentary-style comedy that parodies things like “An Interview With The Vampire” The show also attempts to explore other versions of monster lore within the universe, but there’s an excellent character-driven emotional quality to the series too and just how hilariously petulant and immature all the vampires are.

You know the story of Tupac Shakur, the now-legendary hip hop icon: uber-prolific, courting fame, controversy, and a rock n’ roll lifestyle of superstardom, Shakur’s hip hop reign was all too brief and he was gunned down by rivals when his career was still ascending. What’s lesser-known to many is the story of Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, an American political activist and former member of the Black Panther Party, their love, their sometimes strained relationship, but also the way her political defiance influenced the music of her son.

Children are hell, and being a parent can be hellish. That’s the amusing premise of the FX comedy series “Breeders,” a bitter-sweet look at the struggles of modern parenthood starring Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit,” “Black Panther”) and Daisy Haggard (“Back to Life”).

FX/Hulu’s big play for Emmy glory in this incredibly crowded season is an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s excellent 2003 book “Under the Banner of Heaven,” a historical analysis of the history of Mormonism in this country framed alongside a dissection of a brutal murder case from 1984 in the state of Utah. While the book had the context of the history of the origin of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints and how it got twisted into the mindset of the fundamentalist sect of Mormonism that pushed Ron and Dan Lafferty to commit brutal murder, the show feels at the beginning like it wants badly to be more “True Detective” and less Ken Burns, improving in the third and fourth episodes as it becomes more about a broken community than a specific murder.
