‘Barry’ Actor Michael Irby on Cristobal’s [SPOILER] and That Sandy Scene: ‘I Was Pulling Sand Out of Places I Can’t Speak of’

Jordan Moreau SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 4 of “Barry,” now streaming on HBO Max. Cristobal Sifuentes, the former leader of the Bolivian mafia, NoHo Hank’s boyfriend and wannabe sand kingpin of Los Angeles, has narrowly evaded death multiple times throughout HBO’s “Barry.” But, in a tragic betrayal, he was killed by Hank’s Chechen henchmen in Sunday’s episode. The happy couple seemed to be on a straight and narrow path after putting their lives of organized crime behind them, and devoting themselves to the sand business. But Hank (Anthony Carrigan) still had dreams of leading the powerful Chechens — ones he didn’t share with Cristobal (Michael Irby). With both Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), having escaped from prison, and the FBI hot on his feels, Hank took the Chechens up on their offer, and ruthlessly orchestrated the murder of his and Cristobal’s makeshift gang by trapping them in a giant silo of sand. Cristobal nearly succumbed to a similar sandy death — after taking a selfie with his henchmen — but made it out alive at the last second when Hank returned and pulled him out.

How Alex Newell, the Non-Binary and Gender Nonconforming Star of Broadway’s ‘Shucked,’ Decided to Compete for Supporting Actor at the Tonys

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Each night at Broadway’s new musical-comedy “Shucked,” audiences are treated to the sweet (and pun-filled) story of Cobb County residents Maizy and Beau, who are forced to postpone their wedding when the corn stalks that fuel their small rural town are ravaged. But the show’s undeniable breakout is Maizy’s cousin Lulu, a local whiskey distiller who convinces her too-innocent relative to travel to Florida to find a way to save their crops. Alex Newell, who plays Lulu, brings down the house in the middle of Act I with the show-stopper “Independently Owned,” an anthem to warn to Maizy’s new friend Gordy, a conman pretending to help Cobb County, that she don’t need no man. On most nights, the rafter-shaking performance concludes with the rare mid-show standing ovation.

How to Snag Affordable Tickets to Broadway’s ‘Shucked’

Anna Tingley If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission. No one could have predicted that the year’s biggest Broadway hit would be about corn. But the new musical comedy “Shucked,” which opened in April, has become the surprise delight of the season, boasting rave reviews for its catchy music, lovable characters and heartfelt themes. The show, which began a decade ago as a stage version of the sketch TV series “Hee-Haw,” follows an isolated rural community whose livelihood is completely reliant on their production of corn. But things go haywire when the crops suddenly fail and Maize (Caroline Innerbichler) is forced to venture out of her small town to Tampa, Florida to ask for outside help.

‘Shucked’ Cast Promises Audiences at New Musical Comedy ‘Will Leave With Better Abs and Very Sore Cheeks’

Michaela Zee editor Aw shucks! The cast and crew of “Shucked” celebrated the musical comedy’s opening at the Nederlander Theatre on Tuesday night. Set in the fictional Cob County, “Shucked” follows Maizy (Caroline Innerbichler in her Broadway debut) as she leaves her small town to find a solution for the community’s rotting corn crops. The musical’s cast also includes John Behlmann, Kevin Cahoon, Andrew Durand, Grey Henson, Ashley D. Kelley and Alex Newell. “They were like, ‘It’s just a sweet show about corn that knows exactly what it is.’ And I was like, ‘OK, what does that mean?’” Henson told Variety before the show. “But then reading the script, I was like, ‘Oh, this is a genius piece of musical theater.’”

‘Shucked’: How Actor Kevin Cahoon Found a Rare Nudie Suit for Premiere of New Broadway Show (EXCLUSIVE)

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Actor Kevin Cahoon donned a famous Nudie Suit by iconic tailor Nudie Cohn to the Broadway red carpet premiere of “Shucked.“ The decorative rhinestone-covered suits — made famous by Elvis, Hank Williams and Post Malone — were on loan to Cahoon, who plays Peanut in the show, from Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors in Hollywood. The musical is filled with catchy numbers and, as the title suggests, is about corn. It’s set in the fictional Corn Cob County, a small-town Southern haven surrounded by… corn. “‘Shucked’ is a brand new, completely original, rhinestoned, star-spangled, American musical with its roots planted firmly in the country, its heart celebrating all of the Nashville greats that have come before, and I am in it,” Cahoon tells Variety. “What in Cob County do you wear?”

‘Shucked’ Review: Cornpone Musical is the Surprise Delight of the Broadway Season

Frank Rizzo Some Broadway wags might have scoffed at the idea of a cornpone musical comedy and its punny promotions. But with its exuberance, heart and non-stop yucks, “Shucked” is the surprise delight of the season. Minus stars and featuring a new Broadway composing team and an original book, this old-pro production is a throwback to the joys of lightweight musical comedy: where fresh talent is discovered, songs are catchy, jokes are plentiful and characters are appealing, fun and sweetly simple. Yet as one character in the show says, “There’s a cornfield of difference between simple and stupid. That’s a simple mistake stupid people make.”

‘Flamin’ Hot’ Review: Believe It or Not, This Neato Latino History Lesson Will Change Your Take on Cheetos

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Americans can’t get enough of processed corn. They eat it for breakfast, in cereal form, and all throughout the day, snacking on cookies and crackers and chips, often washing it down with soda (sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, naturally). Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, “Flamin’ Hot” tells the backstory of Frito-Lay’s insanely popular, ultra-spicy line of snack chips — the ones that singe your taste buds and stain your fingers a radioactive red — as marketing guru Richard Montañez lays it out in his memoir, “A Boy, a Burrito, and a Cookie: From Janitor to Executive.” After a rough start selling drugs and hustling on the streets of East Los Angeles, Montañez got a job cleaning the machines at Frito-Lay’s Rancho Cucamonga plant and worked his way up to head of Multicultural marketing. Along the way, he may or may not have invented the recipe for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Doritos, et al.

‘Children of the Corn’ Review: In the Latest Sequel Slash Reboot, There Isn’t a Kernel of Fear Left

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Like a virus that keeps coming back but growing weaker each time, “Children of the Corn” is now a horror movie that lacks the strength to infect you with even a speck of fear. The original strain of the virus was Stephen King’s short story — published in 1977, at the heart of his shivery heyday. The tale of a group of Nebraska farm-town children who worship a demon that lives in the local cornfields, it was like a slasher version of “Lord of the Flies,” with a touch of the creepiness of “The Wicker Man.” The kids killed the adults around them, but the scariest thing about them is that they’d become a cult. The cornfield demon, known as He Who Walks Behind the Rows, was less a monster than a force, one that spoke to gathering forces in our society — impulses of religious zealotry and intolerance that were starting to take shape by the late ’70s.
