Canadian Actor Simu Liu Surprises Edmonton Restaurant

Naman Ramachandran Canadian drama series “Streams Flow From a River” will debut in Canada on Super Channel, available on Apple TV and Prime Video Channels, on April 1. The series is in the Canneseries short format competition and will have its international premiere at the festival on April 18. Produced by Canadian scripted production company Fae Pictures, “Streams Flow From a River” (6 x 14′) is the first Canadian series from an all-Asian writers’ room and 75% East Asian crew led by producer Shant Joshi (“Framing Agnes,” “Porcupine Lake”). Joshi is one of MipTV’s Producers to Watch 2023 and will be attending Mip-Canneseries Connections event.

After the release of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding the filmmaker’s depiction of Bruce Lee. In the film, you may remember, it’s shown that Brad Pitt’s character is able to beat up Lee in a fairly quick manner.

Angelique Jackson “Luce” writer JC Lee is set to make his directorial debut with “Bad Genius,” the upcoming English-language remake of the 2017 hit Thai film “Chalard Games Goeng (Bad Genius).” Picturestart and Picture Perfect Federation are producing the project, which will star Benedict Wong (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) alongside up-and-coming talent Callina Liang (“Tell Me Everything”) and Jabari Banks (“Bel-Air”). The film is financed by Mallory Edens’ Little Ray Media and will begin production in May. The original film was written and directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya and produced by Thai film studio GDH 559 Company Limited. The movie debuted at No. 1 at the Thai box office, quickly becoming the country’s highest-grossing Thai film of the year and, ultimately, the most internationally successful Thai film ever.

Glee actress Lea Michele has revealed her two-year-old son Ever has been hospitalized. The Broadway star shared with fans that she would not be performing in Funny Girl on Wednesday March 22 because "we are at the hospital with our son dealing with a scary health issue that I need to be here for"."I'm so sorry," Lea, who shares Ever with husband Zandy Reich, continued.

Ethan Shanfeld Fifth Season, the production house behind “Severance,” “Tokyo Vice” and “80 for Brady,” is developing series based on Jean Kwok’s 2014 novel “Mambo in Chinatown,” as well as her upcoming book “The Leftover Woman,” which hits shelves later this year. According to its official description, “The Leftover Woman” is “an evocative family drama and riveting mystery about the ferocious pull of motherhood for two very different women.” Published by William Morrow, the novel will be released on Oct. 10, 2023. “Mambo in Chinatown,” which landed on various year-end lists in 2014, is “about a young woman torn between her family duties in Chinatown and her escape into the world of ballroom dancing.”

Deadites are everywhere in Lee Cronin’s newest film Evil Dead Rise. Taking place in cosmopolitan Los Angeles, these wacky demons still cause high-rise havoc in the modern era. Also written by Cronin, a true fan of the franchise, the movie stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lilly Sullivan, Morgan Davies, Gabriele Echols and Nell Fisher. It is interesting seeing these stories shift from a male to female perspective, showing that women can also be heroes of the supernatural as well. 

Karen Bliss Canada’s Juno Awards broadcast didn’t need the Weeknd in the house for a little excitement at Edmonton’s Rogers Place Monday night (March 13). Albertans were already pumped with pride for the induction of their hometown rock stars, Nickelback, later in the show and a night-capping medley by the band, who hail from the tiny town of Hanna. But the 12,000 people in attendance got an unexpected eyeful when a topless protestor managed to get on the stage as Avril Lavigne was introducing top-selling Punjabi performer AP Dhillon. The camera operators did pull back to a wide shot for those watching at home, but there was no time to bleep when Lavigne let off a couple of F-bombs to get the woman off the stage.

Avril Lavigne killed it at the Junos but she also had someone by her side – a naked Ontario greenbelt protestor interrupted Lavigne and drew attention to Ontario’s plans to develop portions of the greenbelt.

Angelique Jackson Hot on the heels of a historic opening weekend for “Creed III,” Jonathan Majors has set his next movie with Amazon Studios, titled “Da Understudy.” Majors will star in and produce the film, under his Tall Street Productions banner, partnering with Westbrook Studios and Amazon. The project tells the story of “life imitating art when the understudy of a Broadway production finds a role he’s willing to kill for.” Tom Hamada, Zach Stauss and Tyler Cole wrote the screenplay, which is based on an original story by Cole and developed in-house by Westbrook. Amazon Studios landed the script on spec in a competitive situation. Sources tell Variety Spike Lee is in very early talks to direct the film, which would reunite the filmmaker and Majors after 2020’s “Da 5 Bloods.”

“Turning Red” that the filmmakers are most proud of is the movie’s depiction of Toronto’s Chinatown. Not a Chinatown full of offensive cliches or dangerous stereotypes, but the type of Chinatown that feels real and lived in and true to its real-world counterpart.

Amy Winehouse actor Marisa Abela was seen swigging from a bottle of vodka as she roamed the streets at night, in new set pictures from the upcoming biopic about the late singing star.The snaps show Marisa, 26, wandering in London wearing a leopard print top and black tracksuit bottoms along with some pink satin ballet pumps, which were favoured by Amy, who tragically died in 2011 of alcohol poisoning, aged just 27. In character as the troubled star, Marisa could be seen drinking from a small bottle of vodka and looking dishevelled, with her black hair falling past her shoulders and black makeup smudged around her eyes.The actress wore large hooped earrings and had a forlorn look on her face as she filmed the scenes for the biopic, which is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
