A critically reviled box-office bomb or an ambitious and misunderstood marvel that deserves reappraisal? It may take more than a couple of years to assess the legacy of Damien Chazelle‘s “Babylon.” But wherever you stand on the 2022 movie, everyone agrees it was a lot of movie: excessive, derivative, audacious, debauched. A film that polarizing isn’t easy to evaluate, and it remains to be seen if time will be kinder to Chazelle’s latest than initial critics and audiences were.

A busy weekend of guild and industry awards ceremonies kicked off with the 2023 ADG Awards, the annual ceremony where the Art Directors Guild hands out their year-end kudos for production design. This year’s non-competitive honorees included Guillermo del Toro, Lilly Kilvert as well as Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.

Regardless of what critics are saying about “Babylon,” there’s no denying that Damien Chazelle is a smart filmmaker, who typically goes out of his way to bring a level of authenticity and respect to his subject matter. Whether that’s the trials and tribulations of a young drummer in music school in “Whiplash” or NASA missions in “First Man,” you always get the feeling that Chazelle strives for accuracy in his very intricate filmmaking style.

How do you know, without seeing the film, that “Babylon” is full of chaos and debauchery? Well, you can read all of the early reviews, which use the term “cocaine-fueled” quite a bit, or you can watch the new trailers for the film. One is called the “naughty” trailer.

We all love actors, directors, music, and all of it, but cinema is obviously a visual medium first and foremost, and boy, do we love a handsome, nice-to-look-at picture. Cinematography usually gets turned into “pretty pictures,” what is the most colorful, the most sun-dappled, etc.

We’ve already gotten the Gotham Awards and have seen the New York Critics Circle announce their winners. As we start the final countdown of 2022, many of us continue to play desperate catch-up of the year’s best, making the prospect of an entire month worth of new releases daunting.

As cinema continues to shapeshift in a very literal formatting sense, and the future remains unclear regarding the size of the screen on which we’ll get to appreciate it, trailers often give us the only taste of a cinematic experience. To feel the rumbling drums of “The Northman” on the big screen or to hear Jenny Slate’s weirdly therapeutic voice for “Marcel The Shell With Shoes On” becomes a physical experience.

The Best Picture field is narrowing. Well, to be honest, there have always been a bunch of unlikely players in the mix, but with the recent screenings of Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” and Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation,” the list of ten likely nominees is getting a bit clearer.

Typically, when we see social media reactions to major film releases, especially blockbusters, the results tend to be very, uh, generous. That’s when you get people really go for hyperbolic statements claiming “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will melt your face and make you pray to the altar of Sam Raimi.

While it’s hard to gauge the effectiveness of a performance based just on a trailer, it’s clear that Margot Robbie is gaining some buzz for her role in the upcoming Damien Chazelle film, “Babylon.” An awards season push is a no-brainer, as Robbie is already twice nominated for Oscars.

After giving us his original “Spider-Man” trilogy, it’s exciting for many comic book movie fans that director Sam Raimi‘s finally returning to the world of Marvel Comics Raimi is in the director’s chair for the upcoming “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” allowing him to play the biggest sandbox in modern cinema, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while that film is starting to bubble with anticipation and is only a few short weeks away, Raimi isn’t closing the door on more Marvel, more specifically, his old Spider-Man character.

Over the past several years, Katherine Waterston has established herself as one of the most interesting actresses working today. With her combination of big studio blockbusters, indie dramas, and everything in between, she’s got projects for all film fans and has showcased her talents in each.

As someone, like you, who is obsessed with films and TV series and the creation of them, there are a ton of stories about actors landing career-changing jobs after years of thankless auditions and terrible projects. Well, I’m not someone that can predict the future, but I have to assume the upcoming film, “Babylon,” is going to be a career-defining moment for Mexican actor, Diego Calva.

The veteran actress Mira Furlan has passed away. The actress’ Twitter handle was updated by her team and stated that she had died just yesterday at the age of 65.

Though we did end up adding “Babylon” to our recently-released Most Anticipated Films of 2021 list, we had a strong suspicion that Damien Chazelle’s first feature film since “First Man” would end up getting pushed until 2022. And ultimately, it appears that intuition was spot on.
