Offbeat Slasher Movies Will Always Have Their Day; ‘Halloween Ends’’ Time Will Come (Commentary)

“Halloween Ends” just opened in theaters, while also being made available on Universal’s streaming platform Peacock, and the response has been divisive to say the least. The third chapter of the new trilogy (once again directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jamie Lee Curtis) made $41.3 million at the box office opening weekend, a good number for sure but lower than the studio and box office prognosticators were predicting. (Elsewhere, Universal is claiming it was a smash for Peacock.) Critically, the results were just as middling.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Opens Season 48 With Meta Manning Brothers Commentary Sketch and a Jon Hamm Cameo

Wilson Chapman editor After a summer filled with cast exits and goodbyes, “Saturday Night Live” opened its 48th Season by poking fun at both frequent target President Trump and its own rebuilding period. The sketch starred the premiere’s host Miles Teller and cast member Andrew Dismukes as sports stars and brother’s Peyton and Eli Manning, in a parody of their “Monday Night Football” commentary show “Manningcast.” However, instead of analyzing the plays of a football game, the two instead turned their insight into the opening sketch of “Saturday Night Live’s” new season. At the top of the sketch, Teller as Peyton addressed the shakeups that the series has gone through other the summer, which saw eight cast members — Chris Redd, Alex Moffat, Aristotle Athari, Melissa Villasenor, Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney — announce their departures from the long-running sketch comedy series. “There are a lot of changes at the show, which could be exciting,” Teller said. “Let’s see what they came up with.”

Penélope Cruz Encouraged Juan Diego Botto to Direct Debut Feature ‘On the Fringe,’ a Devastating Commentary on Spain’s Eviction Crisis

Ed Meza @edmezavar Juan Diego Botto’s feature film debut is a heart-breaking social drama and scathing critique of the neoliberal structures that have resulted in a catastrophic eviction crisis in Spain, where more than 400,000 people have been forced out of their homes over the past decade. “On the Fringe” screens in the Zurich Film Festival’s country focus sidebar, New World View, which this year showcases works from new Spanish filmmakers. The impressive achievement, which premiered in Venice, grew out of a conversation Botto had with friend Penélope Cruz after she saw a play he had written and was starring in. She suggested he write a script for a project they could do together, perhaps a relationship drama, something to do with jealousy, the Argentine-Spanish multi-hyphenate recalls.

just $1.6 million, mostly overseas); music artist Camilla Cabello’s fans pushed her Prime Video “Cinderella” adaptation to second place; and the militant Zack Snyder army assembled once more to vault their beloved filmmaker’s latest film to the top spot. The awkwardly cut montage of these four films plus “tick, tick… BOOM!” (which landed in fifth place) was buried in the telecast and met with silence in the Dolby Theatre. What makes the move even more embarrassing — and borderline offensive — is the fact that the winningest film of the night was “Dune,” a sci-fi epic that grossed over $400 million worldwide and spawned a sequel that begins production this year. Was this critically acclaimed blockbuster not a legitimate fan favorite? The Oscars producers were so concerned with finding a way to shoehorn “Spider-Man” into the telecast that they neglected the fact that Academy voters were already highlighting a genuine franchise film in all the major categories.
