Are we even surprised nowadays when a trailer for a new Stephen King adaptation arrives? Since the massive success of the two “It” films, studios have been snatching up the rights to various King novels over the past several years. But what makes this new one a little more intriguing is that the new “Firestarter,” produced by the horror studio, Blumhouse, is the second try at a beloved King classic.

Horror is one of the most subjective genres in all of film. In horror, one person’s trash can be another’s treasure.

Horror fans know some basic rules for surviving a horrific encounter. First, if you stop at a gas station in the Deep South, don’t interact with the locals.

Michael Myers is back! And this time, he’s going to…well, kill a bunch of people.

Most moviegoers know Scott Derrickson nowadays as the director of the 2016 Marvel film “Doctor Strange.” However, horror fans remember Derrickson well before he made the jump to the MCU. The writer/director has made a lot of low-budget genre fare over the years with a supernatural bent: 2000’s “Hellraiser: Inferno,” 2005’s “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” and 2012’s “Sinister,” starring Ethan Hawke, among them.

You can’t kill the boogeyman, and you can’t kill the “Halloween” franchise either. After a couple of story retcons in the original slasher series and Rob Zombie‘s take on the Michael Myers mythos, The Shape rose again in 2018 with David Gordon Green‘s “Halloween.” A redundant title to a tired narrative, to be sure, but there are plenty out there (including this writer) who still love to see Laurie Strode duke it out with Haddonfield’s least favorite son.

James DeMonaco (“The Purge“) has mostly lived in the horror genre throughout his career. He gained notoriety throughout his involvement in the topical ‘Purge’ films, directing the first three films and producing “The First Purge” and “The Forever Purge.” That franchises’ profitability under the Blumhouse banner has given the director the freedom to work on something new.

You should know the drill by now, but here’s a reminder if you don’t know the routine. In something that may turn into an annual tradition, if the deal extends, that is, Blumhouse Productions is back with its anthology horror series, “Welcome To The Blumhouse,” a collaboration with Amazon Studios.

After giving horror fans a solid “Halloween” installment, serving as a sequel to the original John Carpenter film with Jamie Lee Curtis playing a more seasoned and gritty incarnation of her iconic Laurie Strode role, director David Gordon Green is back with “Halloween Kills” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival yesterday.

Typically, when a studio revives a horror franchise and tries to reboot it for a new audience, fans roll their eyes. This has been seen time after time, and mostly, these reboots/revivals result in a subpar product.

Sure, not every Blumhouse film is a winner. That comes with the territory when you’re a studio that specializes in micro-budget horror films that typically don’t feature big stars.

Blumhouse horror franchises (mostly) seem to be keen on mixing things up with subsequent films, often changing casts, settings, and stories. This is probably best seen in “The Purge” franchise, which has morphed from a home invasion thriller in the original to a large-scale action film series with serious messages about politics and society as a whole.

Though it was only released a little more than a year ago, it feels like a lifetime has passed since “The Hunt” hit theaters last March. Most of that feeling is due to the pandemic upending the entire world for more than a year.

The “Halloween” films are a franchise of many canons. The series has now retconned itself three times, although it’s up for debate whether Rob Zombie‘s pair of films from the late 2000s count as retcons or remakes.

Thankfully, it seems that, for the second year in a row, the number of April Fools jokes has decreased. Obviously, with a year-plus pandemic still causing issues with people’s day-to-day lives, we really don’t need silly fake news to pop up everywhere.
