As Spyglass Media Group scrambles to figure out what’s next for the “Scream” franchise, director Christopher Landon, who exited “Scream VII” last December, continues to land new projects. The latest for Landon after the creature feature “Big Bad“? Deadline reports he’ll direct “Drop,” the newest team-up between Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes.

Well, this isn’t much of a surprise given the recent box office result of 2023’s “Exorcist: Believer” movie, a reboot and legacy sequel to the original William Friedkin “Exorcist” movie from 1973 made by Blumhouse and Universal. Filmmaker David Gordon Green is exiting the franchise, the search is on for a new filmmaker, and in the interim, Universal has taken the sequel, “The Exorcist: Deceiver” sequel, off the calendar.

Where the Dark Universe failed before it even started—you know, the big shared universe with Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Angelina Jolie, etc.—Blumhouse has shown they have the Midas Touch with horror. Look at what they did, for example, with Leigh Whannell’s terrific and inventive traumatic gaslighting horror, “The Invisible Man,” starring Elisabeth Moss.

We’ve been talking about a Blumhouse remake of “Wolfman” for years now. Way back in 2020, after the massive success of Leigh Whannell’s “Invisible Man,” he was quickly snatched up by Blumhouse to take another Universal Monster and reimagine it.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that a film with a very small budget that earns over $160 million worldwide is going to get a sequel. It’s taken years to get here, but the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” movie we’ve all anticipated is finally here, from Blumhouse Pictures and director Emma Tammi. The film is set at an abandoned family entertainment center and stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a security guard coping with past traumas while accepting a graveyard shift at the FEC, where he discovers that the facility’s animatronic creatures come to life and kill anyone who is on the grounds after midnight.

If you listen to the many pundits out there who will bend your ear off about every topic, one of the biggest topics right now is theatrical and how theatrical can “live” for the rest of the summer and beyond without superhero films and tentpoles. Check the trades, there have been many various nervous posts worried about the theatrical experience between now and, say, October when some blockbusters return to the screen.

It set a new standard for a sub-genre entry, becoming a global pop-culture phenomenon in a way that had not been seen since “The Blair Witch Project.” It’s a masterclass in fear that hits every target it aims for.

Director Karyn Kusama (“Jennifer’s Body“) has recently been making quite the career comeback with films such as “The Invitation” and the Nicole Kidman cop thriller “Destroyer” along with being involved with the hit Showtime series “Yellowjackets.” However, after being hand-picked by Blumhouse to make a new Dracula film two years ago, the film is sadly not moving forward.

Are we even surprised nowadays when a trailer for a new Stephen King adaptation arrives? Since the massive success of the two “It” films, studios have been snatching up the rights to various King novels over the past several years. But what makes this new one a little more intriguing is that the new “Firestarter,” produced by the horror studio, Blumhouse, is the second try at a beloved King classic.
