Mikel Arteta has admitted he is unsure how long Declan Rice could be ruled out for following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The £105million man was uncharacteristically substituted at half-time during the North London Derby. Since arriving from West Ham United in the summer, Rice has made an immediate impact for the Gunners.
A new-found energy and defensive structure in midfield, combined with his leadership skills, has had many believing Rice could be the missing piece for Arsenal’s Premier League push. The 24-year-old also bagged a stoppage-time winner against Manchester United earlier this month.
Any lengthy spell on the sidelines would give Manchester City a boost in the title race. While already five points clear of the Gunners, the two are set to meet on October 8.

Rice’s half-time replacement, Jorginho, was at fault for Spurs’ second equaliser immediately after Arsenal went 2-1 up. Speaking post-match, Gunners boss Arteta confessed it was “strange” to see Rice withdrawn through injury.
“He had some discomfort in his back and was telling us during the first half he was uncomfortable,” Arteta said. “Hopefully it’s not (too serious). It’s strange that a player like him has to come off. So we’ll see.”
Arteta also expressed his disappointment at not being able to claim all three points - despite leading twice - over their bitter rivals. Arsenal remain undefeated this season but a draw meant they were unable to climb higher than fifth in the table.
“Well we are very disappointed not to win the three points,”
