During his pre-match press conference, Guardiola said: "He [Phillips] will start. Jack is much better, Mateo as well, I don't know how many minutes, maybe the second half, they will play."
He added: "Now is an exceptional situation as a lot of players are injured and a lot have played a lot of minutes so they will have to rest. I have to take into consideration the effort in this period and the injuries or we're going to be in trouble."
In an ideal world, Guardiola would be able to rest his regular starters from the off and offer opportunities to fringe players. However, the injury situation might limit the changes he can make with Kovacic and Grealish among the options
