A new drama revealing the harrowing reality of what it was like for doctors and medical professionals during the first wave of the pandemic is being aired on ITV. The first episode of the three-part series will be shown on TV screens tonight (Monday, February 19) and follows acute medicine consultant Dr Abbey Henderson, played by Joanne Froggatt, as she struggles with her team to deal with the first wave of Covid-19 patients.
As the drama unfolds, the episodes will see the medical team rapidly run out of PPE, staff, and beds. And Abbey will be forced to make difficult decisions as her colleagues begin to be infected with the virus.
With hospitals and medical professionals across the country experiencing the same unthinkable challenges at the height of the pandemic, how did the real-life account of 'Breathtaking' come to be on our TV screens?

The series was filmed in Belfast last year between April and May and is set in a fictional big-city hospital. It was produced in association with Northern Ireland Screen.
The drama is based on the book by Dr Rachel Clarke. Dr Clarke’s experiences of working on the NHS frontline during the pandemic.
Rachel Clarke said: "There is so much misinformation and rewriting of history around what really happened inside our hospitals during the pandemic. The truth is, NHS staff gave everything they had in impossible conditions that sometimes cost them their lives. It is an honour to try and depict the courage and decency of my NHS colleagues on screen, and I’m so grateful to ITV and HTM Television for giving me the chance to show the public the truth."
Dr Clarke was previously a current affairs journalist and attended medical school
