Following her role as a feisty droid in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” actor/writer/producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) took another plunge into the world of blockbusters to reunite with Lucasfilm for their fifth and final “Indiana Jones” installment. Well, she must have had a bunch of fun on “The Dial of Destiny” as she’s looking to return to familiar franchise territory with a newly announced live-action “Tomb Raider” series at Amazon, a video game franchise very much inspired by likes of “Indiana Jones” but with a modern setting.

“Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny” opens in theaters tomorrow, introducing Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena Shaw, Indiana Jones’ goddaughter and a crucial part of the new film’s story. So will Waller-Bridge’s turn as Helena be a Hollywood breakout for the “Fleabag” creator? We’ll see.

“Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny” got the red carpet treatment in with its Disney premiere in LA yesterday (and an additional press screening in NYC). And the cast of the new “Indy” installment was there to help promote the film, Phoebe Waller-Bridge among them.

Once MGM Studios lost the rights to adapt the “Tomb Raider” video game franchise, the future of all the projects in development became very uncertain. Then there was a high-profile scramble for a buyer to make themselves the new home of the IP, and well, it looks like Amazon has landed the rights.

Embracer Group has today announced that its acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal is complete, following the agreement in May 2022.The acquisition sees Embracer Group taking ownership of the three development studios alongside a host of intellectual properties (IPs) including Tomb Raider, Deux Ex, Legacy of Kain and “more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd.” according to an announcement on its website.Today (August 26) Embracer Group has announced that “all conditions for the transaction, including regulatory approvals, have now been fulfilled and the transaction may be completed.” The acquired studios will form the 12th operative group under the leadership of Square Enix America and Europe CEO, Phil Rogers.In a statement on the acquisition, Rogers said, “Embracer is the best kept secret in gaming: a massive, decentralised collection of entrepreneurs whom we are thrilled to become a part of today.”Embracer Group completed the acquisition for a reported £253.6million ($300million), with the valuation raising some eyebrows, but was decided on the basis that there was “limited competition for acquisition of the assets” (via, Euro News).

What’s next for the “Tomb Raider” franchise? At this point, its future is wide open, as TheWrap reports that MGM no longer has the film rights to the gaming franchise. The studio, which recently sold to Amazon, had until May to greenlight a sequel to their 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander.
