As we approach the end of summer, it’s time to look ahead to the fall film festival season. This is the time of year when folks like the people at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) begin to finalize their lineup of screenings.

Sure, Steven Spielberg is debuting his newest film, “The Fabelmans,” at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. That film is joining a huge list of major debuts at the event this fall.

In a nice change of pace, the Toronto International Film Festival has announced many of its world premieres over the past few weeks instead of one traditional deluge. There is Steven Spielberg’s “The Fablemans,” Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman” with Harry Styles, Clement Virgo’s “Brother,” “Bros” written and starring Billy Eichner, Sanaa Lathan’s “On The Come Up,” and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” with Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu.

It’s already been a busy year for Lena Dunham. Her last movie, “Sharp Stick,” had its world premiere (albeit a virtual one) at Sundance in January, and it hits theaters later this week.

And just like that, the fall festival season commences. Today, the Toronto International Film Festival revealed its first world premiere, Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” The first “Knives Out” debuted at the 2019 edition of the festival.

The 2021 Fall Festival season seemed to bring a sense of normalcy 18 months into the COVID pandemic. Venice, Telluride, and the New York Film Festival all had in-person screenings with no capacity restrictions.
