The Great has been cancelled by Hulu after three seasons.Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, and starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s longest-reigning female ruler.It’s currently unclear why Hulu decided to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020.

Watching beloved series get suddenly canceled shouldn’t be much of a shock anymore, in this era of streaming companies trying to figure out how to make money. The third season of Hulu’s “The Great” wastes no time showing viewers something new and unexpected. A major character dies in the first episode, but not as a punchline in the vein of another key figure who falls out of a window during an energetic bout of sex.

May is yet another big month for new releases (not to mention finales as we excitedly await the end of “Barry” and “Succession” on the same night.) Before Hulu’s terrific and hilarious historical drama/satirical and black screwball comedy “The Great,” was a successful TV series starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, now entering its third season, it was actually a play in Australia written by the same showrunner Tony McNamara. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favorite,” the Academy Award-winning screenplay that McNamara eventually wrote was not out yet, and so for its stars that had no reference point yet — a period piece set during the `1700s period of Russian Enlightenment, but also a super clever ratatat-style comedy in the vein of “His Girl Friday”— was hard to wrap their heads around.
