Another day, another rumor essentially confirmed. So, you’ll remember that in April 2022, it was reported that Adam Sandler and The Safdie Brothers (“Good Time”) were going to make a follow-up film to their critically acclaimed collaboration “Uncut Gems.” The movie, for Netflix, was supposed to shoot in the late winter of 2023 for a 2024 release.

The last couple of years haven’t been kind to the biggest brother duos in filmmaking, the Coens and the Safdies. Previously, we saw that both Coen brothers have gone on to split as a duo and direct their own feature films.

Everyone loves Adam Sandler in the Safdie Brother’s “Uncut Gems,” including Adam Sandler. The hyper-intense A24 crime drama (which we described as an “insane, cocaine-fueled New York street hustle”) received major accolades and is considered one of Sandler’s best serious performances, if not his best.

Jerrod Carmichael is one of the most underrated comedians working today. After years of standup, supporting roles in films, and his own sitcom (“The Carmichael Show”) that ran for three seasons, Jerrod Carmichael is sadly still not a household name.

“I’ve referred to it as the ‘Valley of the Dolls‘ Pee-wee movie,” Paul Reubens said about the “dark” Pee-Wee Herman movie he’s been hoping to make for a few years. “It’s about fame.” Last year, news came out the Reubens, the creator and character of Pee-Wee Herman, had approached “Uncut Gems” filmmakers the Safdie brothers, Benny and Josh, if they wanted to direct the film, and apparently, they were considering it.

In the past decade, there have been a number of successful and praised dramatic TV shows and movies led by actors with a comedy background, from “Breaking Bad,” to “Uncut Gems.” Given how much critics and audiences were campaigning for Adam Sandler to get an Oscar nomination for his role in the Safdie Brothers‘ film, it isn’t a surprise to see other comedians want to give dramatic roles a shot.

One of the most memorable podcasts we listened to last year was an episode of the A24 podcast cheekily titled “Seduce and Destroy.” Therein, “Uncut Gems” directors Josh and Benny Safdie sat down to chat with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson about Darius Khondji, the magic of Adam Sandler, and the lasting influence that “Punch-Drunk Love” had on the Safdies when they were young.

Adam Sandler‘s performance in “Uncut Gems” was one for the books, a memorable role that saw a performer at the peak of his abilities return to the big screen. Though the film received no love from the Oscars, the film still became one of the most beloved films of 2019, and one of its most memorable aspects was the film’s potty mouth.
