AJ and the Queen are just as royally entertaining in real life!

RuPaul, 59, is excited about the release of his highly anticipated new Netflix show AJ and the Queen, and during the feature’s premiere at Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA on Jan. 9, he talked about what he wanted to accomplish when making the decision to go forth with the project.

Thursday night as the “AJ and the Queen” premiere kicked off and drag queens and more attendees glitzed up the scene and gathered to celebrate RuPaul’s new Netflix series.

RuPaul is one of the single most impactful TV stars of the decade just concluded, thanks to a funny sort of double performance. As the host and presiding judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the performer is “himself” in a sort of emcee drag of tailored suits and black-framed specs before emerging, each episode, as the character “RuPaul,” defined by big wigs and high dudgeon.

When RuPaul and Michael Patrick King first began working together, they were pleasantly surprised to find they both had strong feelings for Preston Sturges’ 1941 feature film “Sullivan’s Travels” — so much so that it became an influence on their Netflix dramedy “AJ and the Queen” for both character and tone.
