After many Thanksgivings spent sneaking away to record supersized episodes of Be Reel, we finally do the sensible thing and just cover films about Turkey Day itself. The trio of “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), “Home For The Holidays” (1995) and “The Ice Storm” (1997) explores the great lengths families go to gather, despite cornucopias of evidence that perhaps they shouldn’t.

Over the past decade, there has been some controversy that surrounds the ‘80s comedy classics from filmmaker John Hughes. Whether it’s the problematic characters and situations or those who felt Hughes wasn’t the right person to tell this brand of coming-of-age comedy, there has been quite a bit of discussion about his features.

“Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” remains one of the most underrated comedies from the 1980s. The film is easily the best Thanksgiving comedy (“Prisoners” is the best Thanksgiving movie, in general—fight me) and is a classic that showcases the talents of two of the biggest comedic actors of the era, Steve Martin and John Candy.
