, Aaron Taylor-Johnson makes his return to the MCU — one of a handful of actors to play two different heroes in the comic universe. But the somewhat reclusive actor admits, in a new interview with, that he has not always been interested in taking roles in the big franchise films.«I wanted, purely, to be with my babies. I didn't want to be taken away from them,» he says of turning down «big, huge franchises» after starring as Pietro Maximoff in 2015's. «I battled with what that would be like…I would say I was probably not ready to be in that position anyway—it was too early.
While he wasn’t necessarily gone per se, it does feel like Aaron Taylor-Johnson is back in a big way.
If memory serves correctly, Sony Pictures was one of the first studios to shift their release date calendar in the wake of the big 2019 COVID-19 pandemic, and now, with another calamity in front of the film industry—the dual WGA (writers) & SAG (actors) strikes—the company is again pretty much the first studio to respond and delay their release calendar in reply.
Sony Pictures is riding high on all the goodwill they’ve gained with the critically acclaimed animated film “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” being a big success at the global box office and with the studio’s massive plans to keep mining the “Spider-Man” universe means more live-action spinoffs are on the way as well. The next film heading to theaters is director J.C.
The idea of an R-rated superhero film is interesting. Some comic books are published as adults only and are filled with nudity, cursing, and extreme violence.
For the second year in a row, CinemaCon is in full swing. And, unlike last year when there were hopes the post-pandemic box office would turn around, the last six months have seen a slew of big hits and increased optimism that the movies are truly “back.” One studio that has had a somewhat slow start to 2023 is Sony Pictures, and the Culver City staple kicked off the convention touting a number of its upcoming tentpoles including “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Kraven the Hunter,” “Dumb Money” and, in partnership with Apple Original Films, Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon.” READ MORE: ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Trailer: Miles Morales wants to change his destiny in the new ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel Sony also brought some in-person star power to the event with Jennifer Lawrence (“No Hard Feelings”); David Harbour and Orlando Bloom (“Gran Turismo”); Issa Rae, Haliee Steinfeld and Shameik Moore (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”); Glenn Powell and Sydney Sweeny (“Anyone But You”); and Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington (“Equalizer 3”).
What’s happening in the world of “Spider-Man” and the entire Spiderverse from Sony? Well, right now, a lot of delays. This weekend, Sony announced several changes in their upcoming Spiderverse schedule, which means all of their films are getting pushed back.
British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Tenet”) is no stranger to comic book roles. He first made big waves in the U.S.
You’d be right to have a little concern about the future of Sony’s plethora of ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff films after the monumental blunder that is “Morbius.” Hell, even though “Venom” and its sequel did great box office business, there are many that think those films are pretty terrible too. Basically, when Sony isn’t teaming up with Marvel Studios on ‘Spider-Man’ films, fans are a bit skeptical.
If you remember, back in the day, filmmaker Sam Raimi was all set to make “Spider-Man 4,” then slated for a May 6, 2011 release. Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst would star again, and at least two new characters/actors would join the franchise: Anne Hathaway as the Black Cat/Felicia Hardy, John Malkovich as Vulture/Adrian Toomes.
She may have won a SAG Award, been nominated for a Tony Award, and just earned her first Oscar nomination for “West Side Story,” but Ariana DeBose is driven by being a “consummate perfectionist.” That means when she watched the celebrated Steven Spielberg musical for the first time she “found a million things” she could have done better. Considering the almost universal acclaim her performance as Anita received, many viewers and her peers would politely disagree.
Though we have yet to see anything outside of two “Venom” films, Sony is hellbent on making its own universe of Spider-Man-adjacent characters a thing. We have “Morbius” arriving soon, “Madame Web” just found its lead, and various other projects in development, including the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter.” And though this little superhero universe is still in its relative infancy, there are some heavy hitter actors signing on.
Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is nearly at $1.9 billion worldwide, and the two “Venom” films account for $1.3 billion in total, establishing that audiences are hungry for the studio’s splinter cinematic universe. Next up for the studio after “Morbius” in their Spider-Verse is “Kraven The Hunter,” the next villain to receive the solo film treatment.
The “Spider-Man” franchise couldn’t be more popular as “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is approaching $2 billion at the global box office. Sony is looking to continue to flesh out its own cinematic universe without the help of Marvel Studios after the success of the “Venom” films.
Even before the runaway success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Sony had been deep in the expansion plans of their live-action Spider-verse. “Morbius” is next coming in April, and after that, in early 2023 will be “Kraven The Hunter,” the latest Marvel film being assembled by Sony Pictures.
While three generations of Spider-Men recently blew the lid off “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which has grossed $1.7 billion worldwide—the sixth-highest film of all time and about to surpass James Cameron’s “Avatar” at the domestic box office with $749 million—with the help of Doctor Strange and Marvel, though we shouldn’t forget that at the end of the day, these are Marvel-produced films that are owned and distributed by Sony Pictures.
Director J.C. Chandor will finally bring “Kraven The Hunter” to the Spider-Man universe and the big screen in 2023.
Sony Pictures has been slowly assembling their own Marvel Comics cinematic universe with characters connected to the “Spider-Man” rights. First, they shocked skeptics, critics, and pundits with the Tom Hardy film “Venom” which grossed over $800 million at the international box office; impressive, given that the film removed Peter Parker’s connection to the anti-hero’s origin and Tom Holland didn’t appear in the film.
The ‘Spider-Man’ universe over at Sony just keeps on growing. After last night’s surprising news that Olivia Wilde is set to helm a female-fronted superhero film in the Sony/Marvel universe, it appears the studio isn’t ready to stop now, as the forthcoming “Kraven the Hunter” feature has finally found its director.
