John Squire on why he’s never had a signature guitar

John Squire has revealed the reason why he has never launched his own signature guitar. The Stone Roses member is regarded as one of the most influential British rock guitarists of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and an icon of the Britpop scene – so it may come as a surprise that he has never issued a signature model of his own.Well, during a new interview with Guitarist Magazine as part of the March cover story, Squire was asked why he had yet to release his own design, which led to him revealing the simple answer: “No one’s asked me.”Speaking with the outlet, the Stone Roses star also shared that another British guitar asked him the same question, and speculated the issue may have been to do with the brand he plays the most often.“Jimmy Page once said to me, ‘Have Gibson not been onto you?’ And I said, ‘No, maybe I play too many [Fender] Strats.’ Jimmy said, ‘Yeah, probably,’” he recalled, before going on to add: “I think it’s more likely to be that they don’t know who I am.”The interview with Guitarist comes in light of Squire teaming up with another Britpop icon, Liam Gallagher, to share a collaborative album. Both the former Oasis star and Stone Roses frontman shared their self-titled debut album earlier this month, following the release of the lead single ‘Just Another Rainbow’ and follow-up ‘Mars to Liverpool’.The album was given a four-star review, with NME stating: “Although [Squire has] been more focused on creating visual art in recent years, the guitarist’s genius remains undimmed, as he adorns these bluesy arrangements with slow-burning grooves and wailing licks that ache with his life-long love of Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.”“This is psychedelic, on occasion even transcendent music brought down to earth by

Nick Cave says new Bad Seeds album ‘Wild God’ is “full of secrets”

Nick Cave has shared more insight into what fans can expect from his new album, saying that the project is “full of secrets”.The Bad Seeds frontman announced details of his new album ‘Wild God’ last week (March 6) – dropping the full tracklist and artwork to the LP, as well as the intriguing title track.Set for release on August 30, the album is co-produced by longtime collaborator Warren Ellis, and was described by Cave as both “a complicated record” as well as “deeply and joyously infectious”.Now, the songwriter has taken to his blog (The Red Hand Files) to answer fan questions about what they can expect from the full album.“I don’t want to say much about the album itself until it is released in August and you get to hear all the songs, but I can tell you that it is a record full of secrets,” he began. “It is made up of a series of complex and interlinking narratives, the title song ‘Wild God’ being the primary point of propulsion, with the songs all feeding off each other – not so much to tell a story, but to rally round an acutely vulnerable and mysterious ‘event’ that resides at the heart of the album’s central song, ‘Conversion’.“I’m excited for everyone to hear the whole thing,” he added.“Then I can tell you a few things that you really must know – like what exactly Anita is talking about, why Kris Kristofferson walks in and out of the truly epic ‘Frogs’, what the real life event in ‘Conversion’ is, why this record is so joyful when almost everyone in the songs is dead, why my wife finally awakens after years of sleep, what is the actual name of the narrator in ‘Long Dark Night’, who are the dozen white vampires in ‘Cinnamon Horses’, and why there is so much damn water.

Festival Republic launch ReBalance for emerging women and non-binary artists: “I hope that more people give them the same opportunity”

NME about the launch of their new ReBalance initiativ eand his commitment to supporting emerging women and non-binary artists..The festival boss, who is behind Reading & Leeds, Download and more, spoke to NME around the relaunch ReBalance – a year-long development programme that provides opportunities to women and gender-expansive artists throughout the UK.Initially, the programme was launched in 2017 and ran for three years, before ultimately being shelved due to COVID. Now, six up-and-coming acts have been announced as participating in the revamped 2024 programme, and are set to receive expert mentorship in the studio, as well as a guaranteed slot at a Festival Republic event in 2025.“I launched it in 2017 because it was apparent — and continues to be apparent — that there is an insufficient number of women and non-binary people getting into recording studios and getting their albums made to the standard where they can get airplay,” Benn told NME, explaining how the initiative looks to offer more than just the opportunity to perform on a festival stage.“It’s the easiest thing in the world to just put more women and non-binary people on a stage at a festival, but if the audience don’t know them, they won’t receive them well and that won’t do their career any good,” he continued.

Lauren Mayberry has shared a new single called ‘Change Shapes’ – you can listen to it below.Arriving today (March 8), the song marks the third solo release from the Chvrches frontwoman following 2023’s ‘Are You Awake?’ and ‘Shame’.Explaining the idea behind the track, Mayberry said it delves into the idea of performance – whether in her band or presenting what her audience, peers and the music industry overall want her to be.“How do I keep people happy enough that they’ll let me do the creative work that I want to? I feel quite fake and hypocritical sometimes because so much of the narrative around the band is ‘feminist,’ but my experience inside of it hasn’t been a lot of the time,” she wrote.“I feel like I did all this work to make things function but when you DO adapt yourself in that way, it’s seen as manipulative, in order to get what you want.”Over a pulsating synth line and snappy drums, Mayberry sings: “It’s exhausting trying so hard all the time/ Performative hypocrisy took over my mind/ I’m a doll inside a box/ With a ball and a chain/ I bend over backwards, tiptoe along every wire/ Guess I’m quite the actress, no one knows I’m a liar/ I’m preaching to the choir/ I’m a body for hire.”‘Change’ is accompanied by an official lyric video – tune in here:Mayberry first shared details of her “fun, freaky, sad, weird [and] joyful” solo material last July before heading out on tour in North America, the UK and Europe in the autumn.

Two Door Cinema Club: “We don’t want people to kneel at the altar of our genius, we want to entertain them”

Two Door Cinema Club have spoken to NME about returning to their roots on new standalone single ‘Happy Customers’, feeling like the album format is “outdated”, playing Reading & Leeds for the seventh time and their newly announced North American tour.‘Happy Customers’ follows on from Two Door Cinema Club’s 2023 single ‘Sure Enough’ and sees the band “return to their roots”, according to bassist Kevin Baird.“It feels like we’ve done the hyper-produced hi-fi stuff [on 2016’s ‘Gameshow’, 2019’s ‘False Alarm’ and 2022’s ‘Keep On Smiling’]. This was just about doing something more simple,” he explained.“The things that are exciting us at the moment are big riffs with high-tempo electronic elements.
