The fallout of the controversial move by WarnerMedia to push all of its 2021 WB films to HBO Max and in theaters on the same day is still being felt in Hollywood as the big picture of what this deal means continues to become more clear. Basically, it’s been a really rough week for WarnerMedia, as stars, filmmakers, and guilds have been just a few of the entities upset with this unprecedented move.

Reflecting on the best trailers released in 2020 feels at once vital and torturous – would we have reacted differently upon first viewing, had we known we might not actually see these films for months, or even years in some cases? The film industry soldiers on and rides with the blows, so we sit tight at home while we wait to enjoy so many movies on the big screen. Then, all we have are the morsels of footage strung together to whet our appetites months and months ago.

When the news was announced that WarnerMedia planned on releasing its entire Warner Bros. 2021 film slate simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters, people were shocked.

When you read Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi epic novel, “Dune,” it’s very easy to fall into the common thought that there’s no way a filmmaker could bring the story to life. This isn’t “Star Wars” or “Guardians of the Galaxy.” “Dune” is a deeply philosophical book about religion, politics, and war.

Now that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has hit (some) theaters and seemingly underwhelmed some audiences and critics, the next big anticipated sci-fi epic of the year is easily Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune.” Based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novels of the same name, David Lynch made a “Dune” movie in 1984, but it’s one of his famous flops, and suffice to say it didn’t come near the franchise potential Hollywood always hoped it would have.

If you’ve never read Frank Herbert’s “Dune,” the story follows a young man, Paul Atreides, who lives in the distant future and becomes royalty on the planet of Arrakis, aka Dune, a world with hardly any water and skyscraper-sized worms that travel under the ground and are attracted to rhythmic movement. That probably doesn’t sound like a story that has many relatable parts to what the world is struggling with today.

Normally, the description of a film as a “sci-fi epic” normally means there will be a heavy amount of CGI and greenscreen work. However, for Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming feature, “Dune,” that’s not necessarily the case.

COVID-19 is over! Movies are back! And everything is… safe? Hardly. It’s been a weird 2020.5 (an adjunct year that started in March) and it’s been going on for about 2.5 years so far.

As the American exhibition industry stays dormant, audiences are having to look to other countries for their festival fix. For example, this weekend marks the final two days of the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), with films competing from around the world in one of the first high-profile festivals post-COVID-19.

David Lynch has been keeping relatively busy during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown that has resulted. No, he hasn’t been making progress on feature films, but he has been releasing a steady stream of YouTube content, including a recent 40-minute video where he answers fan questions.

As the second half of 2020 begins to solidify, and film fans are able to fully plan which blockbusters will be arriving later this year, it’s clear that “Dune” is still perhaps the most-anticipated release on the calendar. And even though Denis Villeneuve’s new film is still scheduled to arrive in December, it appears that work is far from done on the sci-fi epic.

Since “Tenet” vacated the July 17 release date, Warner Bros. decided to give Christopher Nolan fans a treat for that date, anyway, with the re-release of “Inception.” However, even if you’re a fan of “Inception” and seen it a million times, the studio is adding a little bonus that might be worth the price of a movie ticket.

Don’t be fooled by the simple, one-word title, the upcoming “Dune” is really just part one of a planned two-parter that fully adapts the classic sci-fi novel written by Frank Herbert. Unlike David Lynch’s adaptation of the novel back in the ‘80s, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve believes that it’s impossible to accurately bring Herbert’s vision to life in only one film.

The first look of Dune is out and it seems like director Denis Villeneuve has successfully been able to take us to a parallel universe where noble houses of the feudal interstellar society control planetary fiefs. The science fiction film is the first installment of a planned two-part adaptation of  Frank Herbert's novel of the same name.
