Last year, not much was known about the future of the pandemic when the theaters shut down in March. At that time, everyone was naive to wonder if we’d see a summer movie season in 2020.
Last year, not much was known about the future of the pandemic when the theaters shut down in March. At that time, everyone was naive to wonder if we’d see a summer movie season in 2020.
Earlier this year, Universal made a landmark deal with AMC Theatres, allowing for some of the films from Universal to arrive on PVOD 17 days (or three weekends) after they’re released. Many saw this as a major loss for theatrical business, as it means the world’s largest theater chain would be allowing for one of the biggest studios to cut into ticket sales after only 17 days.
Cinemark, much like the rest of its theater chain competition, is struggling. During a recent investors call, where CEO Mark Zoradi revealed the Q3 losses for the company (via Deadline), it appears that the third-largest cinema chain in the US isn’t immune to the disastrous business that is plaguing the theatrical experience right now, as we continue to deal with a surging pandemic.
The truth is, there are a lot of film fans that are still very apprehensive about going to indoor movie theaters and watching a film on the big screen in the US. This is evidenced by the fact that box office numbers have been incredibly low, even by pandemic standards, which has forced many films to be delayed out of the current fall film slate into 2021 and even skipping theaters and going to VOD or streaming.
Last week, a landmark deal between AMC Theatres and NBCUniversal rocked the film industry, as the two agreed to shorten the exclusive theatrical windows for films from nearly three months to merely 17 days, allowing for the film studio to release features on Premium VOD less than three weeks after they debut on the big screen.
As we said yesterday, it was only a matter of time before AMC Theatres’ decision to delay the chain’s reopening until the end of July would impact the previously-announced dates for Regal Cinemas and Cinemark. And on cue, both of the other chains have revealed that their plans for reopening would also be delayed as studios try to figure out the best time to release films during a pandemic.
In the grand scheme of reopening cinemas in the US, we all know that studios are only looking at a few areas as real barometers for when they can move forward with their release schedule. Those areas include New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Cinemark has been making news over the past 24 hours thanks to being one of the world’s largest cinema chains and speaking publicly about the details about reopening in July. And though it appears that Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi does want to take a number of appropriate precautions to make sure the customers are safe and healthy while watching films, there’s one measure that the company is a bit lax on—face masks.
When the COVID-19 pandemic began to really affect the film industry, most people were concerned about what all these film delays would mean for the summer movie season this year. Instead, what they should have been worried about is not just 2020 but also 2021 and beyond, as film releases have been delayed and a majority of feature productions have been suspended for the foreseeable future.
Has there been a film with a more anticipated release date than Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet?” Unlike the release dates for a big Marvel Studios film or the latest “Star Wars” movie, Warner Bros’ “Tenet” is not only poised to be one of the biggest films of the year, but it’s also being looked at as the film that will reignite the theatrical experience after the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down a number of months ago.
Cinemark is temporarily reducing wages for all U.S. employees while its theaters remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Cinemark, the nation’s third largest movie theater chain, has joined AMC and Regal in closing down operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.
