Netflix inarguably had a very big night at the SAG Awards, both in movies and TV categories taking half of the latter’s eight categories across three shows ( The Queen’s Gambit, Ozark, The Crown), and three of the five big movie categories including both Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman  in the lead acting slots , and for Outstanding Cast The Trial Of The Chicago 7  winning the big award of the evening which is SAG’s equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar.

When the story is written about this year’s pandemic-afflicted Oscar nominations, the lede may not be about the effects of Covid at all. And it may not be that the only theaters Oscar voters saw the contenders in were drive-ins. And it may not be that three of the Best Picture nominees actually qualified through streaming.

The late Chadwick Boseman made  SAG nomination history today receiving four nominations. No actor has ever gotten that many in a single year in the movie categories, but Boseman was nominated for his lead role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, his supporting turn in Da 5 Bloods, plus two more nominations as member of the casts of both those films , truly historic,and a sign of just how much respect his fellow actors have for the star who died of cancer in August , far too young.
