The protagonist in Woody Allen’s new movie, “A Rainy Day in New York,” is named Gatsby Welles, though calling “A Rainy Day in New York” “new” is a tad generous; after production wrapped in 2018, Amazon Studios snapped it up for distribution and then unceremoniously dropped it after Allen stumbled on a microscope slide for contemporary scrutiny under the lens of #MeToo.

Woody Allen’s film “A Rainy Day in New York” was expected to be released more than two years ago. However, with the filmmaker’s past coming back to haunt him with allegations of sexual abuse still being lobbed his way, combined with his comments about #MeToo, ‘Rainy Day’ was dropped by Amazon Studios and has yet to be released in North America.

Taking place over a weekend in Manhattan, A Rainy Day in New York revolves around youthful lovers Gatsby (Timothee Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Elle Fanning) who find their relationship being tested after the latter gets entangled with film auteur Roland Pollard (Liev Schrieber).

Woody Allen has hit back at Hollywood stars who denounce him, saying it is “like everybody suddenly eating kale”.
