In the first episode of the Radio 4 programme, Michael and Associate Professor Matt Robinson explains how a few minutes of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can help rejuvenate you by helping restore your mitochondria, your cell's energy powerhouses.
It turns out you don't have to step foot in the gym to get a huge boost. If you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, Prof Robinson says simple moves like taking the stairs or increasing your pace for a few minutes will do the trick.
Michael says: "Intense aerobic exercise that gets your heart rate going is one of the best you could do to stay young. It not only helps build your muscle mass, but it gives you more energy, boosts the immune system, improves your heart health and keeps your brain sharp, which is why it can make you look and feel years younger particularly if you get out of breath a bit."
He continues: "Exercise and HIIT in particular really can have a potent rejuvenating effect across your entire body from your immune system to your brain skin and your heart. Scientists think a lot of that is down to mitochondria, the power sources within your cells."
