Emmerdale may be saying goodbye to one character, who has been a staple in the Dales for 23 years, as they made a huge U-turn on Wednesday night. Viewers will remember that last year Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) discovered that her ex-husband (Alan McKenna) and his wife Lucy (Charlotte Asprey) were expecting a baby. A few months earlier, the couple had told Rhona that they couldn't have a baby due to fertility problems.
It later emerged that they had used embryos previously frozen by Gus and Rhona, making Rhona the baby's biological mother. And when Lucy sadly died giving birth to baby Ivy, the newborn was sent to stay with Rhona for a while while a heartbroken Gus came to terms with his wife's death. However, when it came time for Ivy to return to Gus, Rhona admitted she couldn't let go of the baby.
This has led to a legal battle between the parents, with Rhona getting arrested for kidnapping after taking Ivy away from the village. She has since decided that she will plead not guilty in court, despite advice from her lawyer suggesting she do otherwise. By pleading not guilty, Rhona could end up facing two to four years in jail, unless there was a sympathetic jury.
While she could avoid jail time by pleading guilty. Explaining that she would not be pleading guilty, Rhona told husband Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and mum Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson): "I can't stand up in that court tomorrow and brand myself a criminal... "I'd never be able to live with myself if I didn't stand up for what's right.
I know what's at stake but maybe I can win this. Either way, my mind is made up, I am pleading not guilty... this is going to trial." Elsewhere in the village, Angelica King (Rebecca Bakes) is also set to be jailed following her
