Matheus Nunes has signed a five-year contract at Manchester City after the club agreed a £53m deal with Wolves.

City were initially paying less but renegotiated with the Premier League side in order to secure more favourable payment terms. The breakthrough in negotiations came after drastic action from the player going on strike had brought concerns that the move may not go through.

The Blues have now confirmed Nunes as their fourth signing of the summer though, taking their spending over the £200m mark following the arrivals of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku. Nunes, 25, will take the No.27 shirt that he wore at Wolves and was most recently worn at City by Joao Cancelo.

Txiki Begiristain, City's sporting director, spoke glowingly of a player that Pep Guardiola hailed as one of the best in the world when the Blues played Sporting in 2021. As well as the expected improvement under his new coach, hopes are high that Nunes can bring something different to the Treble winners.

“Matheus is a fine player. We are really happy he is here, and we know he will help us this season and beyond," said Begiristain. “He possesses real quality and will bring a fresh dynamic to this team. He is a player who can play passes that open defences, he can beat players and he is technically excellent.

“Everyone knows Pep improves players – we have seen it so often – and we cannot wait to see how Matheus develops under his management.”
