Wolves manager Gary O’Neil says Matheus Nunes fully understands the stance of his club after a £47m bid from Manchester City was rejected, but understands why the midfielder would want a move to the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola is mulling over new additions to his squad ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline and gave the green light for a Nunes approach. He, alongside Crystal Palace star Ebere Eze, is on a shortlist of potential last-gasp targets.
It’s thought that a deal for either is unlikely given the lack of time for Wolves and Palace to find ample replacements. City are having to deal with losing Kevin De Bruyne for four months due to a recurring injury.
Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden have tried taking on the mantle with good success but it seems Guardiola is keen for reinforcement. O’Neil confirmed on Friday that a tabled bid for Nunes had been turned down albeit understood that the prospect would appeal to the player, who is suspended for Saturday’s clash at Everton.

“If Manchester City come calling, most people in world football are going to be interested in that,” O’Neil said. “But Matheus understands the contract situation. He understands the club’s stance, he’s part of the group until he isn’t.
“I’d have loved to have had him available (at Everton). He’d have been fine. He’s a focused boy who understands so I’d much rather have him available than not.”
O’Neil insisted that Nunes remains part of his plans and the midfielder would not let City’s interest distract him. He said: “I’m 100 per cent sure if Matheus is here at the end of the window, which I hope he is, he’ll be an important part of the group.”
