A Scots holidaymaker has described the moment a volcano erupted in Iceland and turned the whole sky red.
Hamish Moir, 54, was in the country visiting his friends when a mobile phone alert informed the group a volcano was erupting in Reykjanes peninsula on at 10.17pm Monday evening.
The group were out for dinner and drinks but quickly finished up so they could head down to shore and try to catch a glimpse of the explosion, Edinburgh Live reports.
Hamish, from Inverness, said the whole sky turned red as lava could be seen spewing from the volcano even in the distance.
Experts warned against travelling to the eruption site as it was releasing toxic gases.
Hamish said: "I was having dinner with some of my friends and someone at the table got an alert on their phone that an eruption had started.
"It took us by surprise a bit. We finished what we were doing and just got in a car and went down to the shore so we could look over and get a good view. The whole sky was red.
"It was quite cloudy so it reflected the eruption well. Even in the distance you could see the fountains of lava. They were very small but you could see them."

Hamish flew back to Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday. When the last volcano erupted on July 10, 2023, he was in the country working as a geologist but said it was fascinating and not scary.
He said: "It was interesting to see. I wasn't exactly scared in the moment because due to me working as a geologist, I know it's not really a dangerous eruption.
"However, when you think of the long term picture of the area, it is a bit more frightening because the lava is potentially moving closer and closer to
