As of January 2023, the average rent a person in Manchester pays is now £1,600 per month. With utilities, council tax and other life essentials on top, paychecks are being stretched leaving very little room to save for a mortgage.
However, a deposit-free mortgage aimed at helping renters get onto the property ladder has been launched.
Skipton Building Society said its "industry first" mortgage would help people get out of "trapped rental cycles". As well as no deposit, The Track Record Mortgage will not require a guarantor either.
Instead, tenants who can show they can afford the mortgage and a track record of paying rent can borrow up to 100pc of the value of a property on the five-year fixed rate mortgage.
But on the streets of Manchester, some of those the new scheme was targeted at were sceptical over whether many would be more encouraged into the housing market. Despite the deposit-free scheme, Taylor Connelly says she thinks it wouldn't totally encourage young people to apply for a mortgage.
