John Stones admitted it was a shock to meet Andres Iniesta earlier this summer and said that he had reservations about asking him for a picture.
The 29-year-old went viral earlier this month when a photo of him and the Barcelona great did the rounds on social media.
Iniesta uploaded the picture to his personal Instagram account and congratulated the City player on his ‘great season’ for the club. Stones says it was purely a chance meeting that saw him spend some time with Iniesta, and has explained how it all came about.
“I was on holiday and went into the gym where I live, I walked in and he was on the treadmill, so it was a pleasant surprise,” he told reporters following the pre-season win over Yokohama. “I said, ‘Morning’ and he was in there with his son and we ended up all having a picture. I was a bit surprised and shocked that he was in there but what a lovely man, a legend of the game. Honestly it was a pleasure, and absolute pleasure to speak to him.”
Stones says he did not ask Iniesta for any advice on how to improve as a midfielder, following his revolutionary position switch last season, but will forever cherish the moment he met footballing royalty.
He added: “No, I didn’t want to ask him, but his son asked for a picture and I thought I’ve got to seize this opportunity and ask him for one. A lovely guy, I think it speaks volumes about him and I think everybody knows his footballing ability.”
