'Henry's is the place to be, for a casual fling or a serious affair': Revealing stories from a lost Manchester bar

A pioneer of Manchester's nightlife, Henry's Cafe Bar promised to add a little 'excitement' to the lives of its customers.
The upmarket bar on the corner of Parsonage Gardens, behind Kendals department store, was an instant hit when it opened in 1986. Its large glass windows tantalised curious onlookers to the plush surroundings and goings on inside, in contrast to the dark glass of pubs designed to prevent people seeing in.
Modelled in the Continental style, Henry's bar sold food all day, offering good coffee as well as alcohol. It was a mecca for '80s 'yuppies' and celebrities, and became one of the best places to be seen in Manchester.
It's been suggested it was also the first bar to be aimed specifically at women and reaped the reward of recognising the power of the female pound. Packed to its 500 capacity every weekend and open all day for food and drinks, it set the template for hundreds of bars which have sprung up all over the city since its inception.
When it opened in 1986, Henry's sold itself as "Manchester's newest, smartest all-day café bar," offering a wide selection of champagne and cocktails. But there was also a suggestion that it was the place to be to add a little 'excitement' to your life.
An advert for the bar placed in the Manchester Evening News the same year, read: "From the first early-morning croissant until the last exotic cocktail heralds another Manchester sunset, Henry's is the place to be, for a casual fling or a serious affair."
And while others have changed their style, Henry's remained the same despite having five different owners over its lifetime. Having established itself as one of the premier and most exciting bars in the city, the Manchester Evening News sent a reporter to chat to
