The village an hour from Greater Manchester named one of the best places to visit in the UK

Across the country there are hundreds of quaint chocolate box villages and historic market towns full of character. These destinations draw visitors from far and wide with cosy tea rooms, welcoming pubs and beautiful green spaces.
To find the best inland towns and villages to visit, consumer group Which? surveyed more than 9,000 members and asked them to rate destinations on various factors including scenery and tourist attractions. Several of those in the top ten are are within easy reach of Greater Manchester, but among them is one place which is rather unique.
Port Sunlight is located on the Wirral Peninsula, around an hour’s drive from Greater Manchester. The village ranked third in the Which? list, beating the likes of Grasmere in the Lake District and Arundel in West Sussex.

It received an impressive score of 80 per cent and was awarded five stars for how peaceful and quiet it is. With over 900 Grade II listed buildings set in 130 acres of parkland and gardens, it’s easy to see why the village has impressed visitors so much.
You might already be intrigued by its dreamy-sounding name, and there’s a reason behind it. It’s actually a model village which was built by Sunlight Soap founder William Hesketh Leverhulme in 1888 to house his workers. He wanted to create a community of cottages in a leafy setting, so workers could enjoy a healthy living environment with a good quality of life.
It was declared a conservation area in 1978 and is one of the finest surviving examples of early urban planning in the UK. Take a stroll around the village and you’ll come across of range of architectural styles, with each block of houses
