A stone’s throw away from Ravenglass in the Lake District, Muncaster Castle is said to be a paranormal hotspot. One visitor on TripAdvisor even called it “one of the spookiest places I have ever visited”.
They wrote: “Spooky old castle - they don’t come much better. This castle is one of the spookiest places I have ever visited. As you enter from the front door you get to feel a very different atmosphere which raises your expectations.” Another described it as a “beautiful haunted castle in a magnificent setting”.

Muncaster Castle is a place steeped in history. The building is believed to be built upon Roman remains and, according to some records, the land has been in the Pennington family since the 1020s. A castle was constructed on the site in the later 13th century, and was enlarged in the 14th when a pele tower was built. Over the following centuries the estate has been developed, creating the beautiful gardens you can see today.
With a history stretching back this far, it’s no surprise that the castle is home to several scary stories. Many of the creepy tales involve Thomas Skelton, also known as Tom the Fool.
