Now only second to London in the number of skyscrapers in a UK city, back in the mid-20th century skyscrapers were a much less common sight in the centre of Manchester. But one now demolished high-rise tower that became a Manchester landmark was Mathematics Tower.
Part of the University of Manchester, construction of the 18-storey tower was completed in 1968. The building was the showpiece of the then, new state-of-the-art university campus off Oxford Road.
Described in the Manchester Evening News in September 1969 as being "big enough to be a town on its own," the 280-acre site was to be transformed into a world-leading seat of learning. However, to create the campus, the M.E.N. reported 700 homes, 100 shops, 30 pubs and seven banks would have to be demolished to make way.
The newspaper described the tower as taking "pride of place" on the precinct with its cantilevered floors, glassed-in balcony and a pedestrian walkway which would thread through the campus. It was a striking sight for anyone travelling along Oxford Road.
