Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that he turned down the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia in a deal that would have made him the highest paid football manager in history.
The profile of the Saudi game has grown at a rapid rate of knots since former United striker Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in January. A whole host of big-name players have followed the Portuguese international in making the move to the Gulf nation.

The growth of the Saudi game has been nothing short of astonishing, with clubs' financial capabilities meaning that they have been able to tempt some of the biggest stars. And now Mourinho, who is currently in charge of Italian heavyweights Roma, has revealed that he turned down a big-money move to a Saudi club, who, according to reports, were Al Hilal.
Mourinho said: "I received the biggest proposal ever in the history of football for a manager. I decided to reject because I told AS Roma board, fans and players that I was going to stay. I gave them my word.
"Until June 30, I'm here fighting for AS Roma. Unless [Dan] Friedkin (Roma owner) tells me not to do that, I'm here and I fight. I'm not scared."
Mourinho, who was appointed Roma head coach in May 2021, less than a month after he left Tottenham Hotspur, was reportedly offered a salary of €30million per season to take the Al Hilal job. He has won a trophy during his time at Roma so far,
