Manchester United goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar has attended Old Trafford for the first time since suffering a brain haemorrhage in July.
The Dutchman worked with Reds boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax while he was chief executive officer, a position he left in May. He was guest of honour for United’s Boxing Day clash with Aston Villa.
Van der Sar was in attendance alongside Sir Dave Brailsford, who is set to be part of the inbound Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s inner circle once his £1.3billion investment is approved by the Premier League. Despite his previous role at Ajax and the coincidental timing of his visit amid Ratcliffe's arrival, there is no suggestion Van der Sar will join the United hierarchy.

Ineos are targeting Newcastle chief Dan Ashworth as a replacement for football director John Murtough with former CEO Richard Arnold already departed. Former Juventus and Paris-Saint Germain official Jean-Claude Blanc is expected to be a part of Ratcliffe’s team.
Van der Sar was Ajax chief when United splashed £47m and £85m on Lisandro Martinez and Antony respectively last year. He was also in the post when Andre Onana was in Amsterdam.
He made his feelings about Onana clear in November when he branded the Cameroon star “my favourite” United 'keeper on social media.
Van der Sar has been linked with a role at United in previous years but admitted back in 2022 that "it's never been that close” despite attaining a “good relationship with the board”. In 2020, he said he would be ”interested” in a boardroom role at United.
