EastEnders viewers are saying they want an iconic character to be axed from the show, after growing tired of his ‘depressing storylines'. Ben Mitchell has been a main character on the BBC soap since 1996, with him being played by six actors in total. During his 27-year run, Ben has undergone a number of drastic appearance and personality changes, seeing him slowly evolve from a quiet and fun-loving child into a killer and wannabe gangster.
Currently played by Max Bowden, 28, who took up the role in 2019, the Albert Square resident has been through a long list of dramatic storylines from male rape to his ongoing battle with bulimia. But now some fans of the show are calling for the writers to either bin ‘dreary’ Ben off or give him a more positive storyline. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, viewers voiced their opinions, with one saying: “Ben Mitchell is always getting depressing, dreary storylines.” Another wrote: "Ben needs to go #EastEnders." A third penned: "I’m getting bored of Ben’s storylines.
Is he the only person on the square that needs to go through everything? It’s giving MAIN character syndrome and we’re bored. #EastEnders." "Ehhhh more Ben and his trawwwwwma. Get rid of these characters.
#Eastenders," agreed a fourth. While another offered a solution saying: “Think Ben Mitchell needs some happy storylines.” But it comes as some fans also praised EastEnders writers for Ben's hard-hitting bulimia storyline. His recent episodes saw him finally come clean to his husband Callum Highway about his rape trauma and subsequent eating disorder.
