'Young people have had a rough time - we told them to stay indoors during Covid then came the cost-of-living crisis'

Young people across Greater Manchester have found themselves trapped in their homes as the cost of living crisis continues, a report has found.
The study found that nearly a quarter (24 percent) of 11 to 18 year olds in the North West have completely stopped seeing their friends and taking part in sports since the pandemic.
HideOut Youth Zone is a local youth charity which opened in September 2020 they provide youth clubs for thousands of young people aged eight to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs.

One of the young people supported by the charity is Max Scanlon, 17, from Denton he said: “I’ve been writing rap songs since I was in year seven but I was always picked on for it. I was surrounded by people who didn’t have dreams and didn’t understand why the quiet boy was writing lyrics.
“That knocked my confidence.” He said,” I didn’t study music at school because it was about learning instruments rather than songwriting.
“That all changed when I walked into the Youth Zone two years ago. Here if you have a dream the youth workers help you achieve it. They encourage you to try different styles or lyrics, they put a mic in your hand and everyone cheers you on, people here want to see you succeed in whatever you want to do. I don’t think I could meet anyone more professional or knowledgeable even if was spending £100 an hour in a professional studio.”
