Street lights in Tameside are to be dimmed ‘imperceptibly’ to save cash – but chiefs say residents won’t notice the difference. As part of proposals to cut costs and also become a more environmentally-friendly borough, the executive cabinet has agreed measures to reduce the brightness of its street lights on its main roads.
Other options such as switching street lights off entirely at certain periods, such as from midnight to 5am, were also considered. However officers admitted that switching off street lights completely may lead to ‘fears for safety’ among residents.

And the council’s appointed insurance broker had advised that Greater Manchester authorities in the past had approached insurers about turning off street lights and insurers have not supported the decision, the report states. Instead the cabinet has agreed to go with a ‘trimming and dimming’ approach on main roads in the borough, where the brightness of street lights are reduced as well as the operating hours, so lights go on and off when it is darker.
