Planning and preparing for Christmas isn't the most stress-free of times. As well as buying all the presents and food, and playing host to family and friends, you have to cook the dinner.
With meat to whack in the oven, carrots to peel and sprouts to trim it can be quite overwhelming. Then of course you need to make sure everything is cooked properly as the last thing you need is to give everyone at the table a bout of Boxing Day food poisoning.
Thankfully the Food Standards Agency has lots of advice to help you make sure everything is cooked and ready to eat.

Firstly, you need to make sure your Christmas turkey has been stored correctly which means that it has been kept in a fridge set at 5C or below. You also need to make sure raw meat is kept covered on the bottom shelf of your fridge to avoid spillages or cross-contamination with vegetables.
You need to make sure the turkey is also defrosted fully and the best advice will be found on the packaging for your meat. However as a whole, it can take between three to five days for a turkey to be fully thawed and this should be done in a fridge, not at room temperature.
According to the FSA allow around 10-12 hours per kg in a fridge to defrost.
In terms of cooking the bird, preheat the oven to 180C and allow 45 minutes per kg plus 20 minutes for a turkey that weighs under 4.5kg. For turkeys weighing between 4.5kg and 6.5kg you should allow 40 minutes per kg and for those 6.5kg and above you should allow 35 minutes per kg.
