For nearly 20 years, Carly Burgess carried a devastating secret that took her to the brink of death.
She was 13 when she first realised her stepdad was watching her sleep at night. Then, he began to touch her. It was the beginning of what would become an increasingly sinister and perverse interest in her, which lasted until she ran away from home aged 15. Over the next 20 years she straddled the line between life and death, abusing drugs and alcohol to try and forget and numb herself to her reality.
In 2020, as she lay on the verge of death in a hospital bed, the 32-year-old from Little Hulton vowed she wouldn't take her secret to the grave. On her way to rehab she volunteered an interview with Greater Manchester Police, telling them of the abuse she had suffered as a teen. Last month at Manchester Crown Court, Alan Murphy, 58, was found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault against her while she was under the age of 16, and sentenced to eight years behind bars. Now 35, Carly wants others to know it is never too late to speak out.

"He [Murphy] came into my life when I was about six," she told the Manchester Evening News. "He brought me up - I did see him as my dad. Before I hit 13 he was the best person ever, I trusted him with my life. But now, that just makes it even worse."
