This Morning came under fire over its coverage of missing British teen Jay Slater, who disappeared 12 days ago on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
The popular ITV show focused its attention on the 'armchair detective' theories surrounding 19 year old apprentice bricklayer Jay's disappearance on Wednesday's show, 26 June, and how speculation was potentially damaging for the ongoing police investigation, not to mention distressing for Jay's family. It followed reports that Tenerife locals had 'spotted' Jay, who's from Oswaldtwistle, watching the Euros matches – after the mayor of a nearby town made the claims.
Celebrities including GMB's Susanna Reid and Corrie's Janice star Vicky Entwistle have also given their views on the disturbing case, with Susanna calling it a parent's "worst nightmare" and an "utter mystery" while Vicky revealed Jay is her godmother's grandson. During the item on This Morning, hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard talked to experts about the speculation over what could have happened to Ben.
Crime journalist Isla Traquair slammed people coming up with wild theories, saying: "People have posted photos of a body, saying 'this could be his body' and they've traced it to a photograph taken in Iceland, so it's just absolute nonsense...
There's links to Moroccan drug gangs, organised crime, human trafficking... the noise online and criticism of him as a person..." The discussion then turned to what might have happened to Jay, and viewers were not happy.
"Not This Morning being critical of people speculating on line and then …. Speculating!" said one person on X, formerly Twitter.
