The partner of a young mum who died in childbirth has spoken for the first time of his devastation.
Sabine Mukanga was just 28 years old and excitedly looking forward to the birth of her baby daughter with her partner, Robert Lawani. But seven months into the pregnancy, Sabine was taken to hospital complaining of heartburn and feeling unwell.
Both Sabine and their baby daughter died soon after and an inquest earlier this month found Sabine had died from internal bleeding. The NHS trust was criticised for ‘shortcomings', but the coroner ruled that even addressing those issues would tragically have not altered the outcome for Sabine.
Robert is now raising their children, aged 7 and 4, alone. Sabine was laid to rest with their baby daughter, Princetta, in her arms.
The hospital has said it has put an action plan in place to learn from Sabine's difficult case.

Robert, 39, from Manchester, says: “I am totally lost without Sabine. She was a wonderful mother, and she was so excited about the birth of our baby. She couldn’t wait.
“The last thing she said, as she was wheeled down for surgery, was: ‘Tell the kids I love them. I’m going to be fine.’ I felt the inquest raised more questions than answers. It doesn’t make sense to me.”
Sabine and Robert met in 2013, working together in a hair salon in Manchester. Robert also worked as a singer and dancer in the evenings. He says: “Sabine was beautiful, and she had a heart of gold. She was really friendly and chatty and would go out of her way to help someone.”
