Incoming Manchester United investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly questioned the club's decision to sign Casemiro for such big money.
The Brazilian midfielder arrived in the summer of 2022 after months of a transfer saga involving Frenkie de Jong. With the Reds desperate for fresh faces in midfield, Erik ten Hag agreed a £70m fee, including add-ons, with Real Madrid.
While the move was questioned by pundits at the time due to his age, Casemiro proved his worth last season and was arguably one of Ten Hag's standout performances. However, the move has looked less shrewd this campaign with his performances slumping.

According to The Athletic, United pundits were not the only ones questioning the deal. Ratcliffe is thought to have been left puzzled by the decision to spend so much on the midfielder.
It is also claimed United staff members believed the club should have pushed harder for Declan Rice when it became clear he would be leaving West Ham.
Elsewhere, Record understands the Reds will be challenging Newcastle and Real Madrid for Goncalo Inacio. The Sporting centre-back has built a solid reputation for himself this season and has been almost ever-present for the Portuguese club. Unsurprisingly, this has seen interest in his signature grow.
Ten Hag is aiming to improve his defence as a priority and should he wish to sign Inacio he could do so for as little as €60m thanks to a release clause inserted in his contract. The defender's current contract is set to expire in 2027.
