A dad who bit off part of a man's nose before issuing a “victory roar” has been jailed. Gerard Devlin, 33, attacked the Belfast man in front of his grandchild before fleeing the scene and arming himself with two knives.
The father-of-four, who had to be tasered by police, was handed an ‘extended custodial sentence’ for the attack after being deemed as a ‘dangerous offender’ by both the Probation Board and Judge Peter Irvine. Devlin was jailed for nine-and-a-half year sentence on Thursday, September 14, with the judge adding that he will serve an extended licence period of three years upon release.
According to Belfast Live, Devlin whose father Gerard senior was murdered in the Ballymurphy area of Belfast in March 2006 - initially denied charges of wounding with intent and the attempted theft of a mobile phone. However, Judge Peter Irvine branded the incident as a “totally unprovoked assault” and a “vicious, violent and disgusting act”.
Prosecutor David Russell told the court previously that police were alerted to reports of Devlin “kicking off in Ballymurphy” at around 11am on August 6, 2021. Soon after the wife of the injured man was in a garden outside a property on Glenalina Road when she witnessed Devlin and another man arguing.
Devlin branded the wife, who was carrying her 17-month old grandchild in her arms, a ‘w****’ as her husband returned from the shops. He then jumped over the garden wall before approaching the woman.
After she said “Gerard I have the child in my hands”, Devlin turned his attention to her husband. Devlin punched the man before putting his fingers in his eye and biting off part of his nose.
Devlin gave a “victory roar” then issued a threat to an onlooker by saying “do you want the face ate off you
